He stood slowly.

For months, Emily had assumed Walter was simply a strange but kind neighbor.

He had moved into the small brick house two doors down roughly three years earlier. His pickup always seemed to contain motorcycle parts, lumber, tools, or bags of groceries. Sometimes motorcycles filled his driveway on Sunday afternoons, though the riders were surprisingly quiet around the neighborhood.

Walter waved at everyone.

Fixed broken lawn equipment without asking for money.

Changed Mrs. Henderson’s flat tire in the rain.

Once repaired Lily’s bicycle after its chain came off.

That was how Lily became attached to him.

“Mr. Gunter can fix anything,” she regularly announced.

Emily had never questioned why Walter sometimes looked at Lily longer than expected.

She had assumed he missed having grandchildren nearby.

Now she wondered if there had always been another reason.

Walter walked to the pickup and reached into the truck bed.

A black cover lay folded beside an old wooden box.

He lifted the box carefully.

Emily immediately recognized the name burned into the lid.

Daniel Carter.

Her breathing stopped.

“Where did you get that?”

Walter carried the box toward her.

Lily looked up.

“That’s Daddy’s name.”

Emily stared at Walter.

“What is this?”

He swallowed.

“Something I should have brought you a long time ago.”

Her face changed from confusion to fear.

“Did you know my husband?”

Walter looked at Lily.

Then back at Emily.

“Yes.”

The entire neighborhood seemed suddenly silent.

Children still played down the street.

A sprinkler clicked somewhere.

A dog barked behind a fence.

But Emily heard almost nothing.

“How?”

Walter placed the wooden box on the open tailgate.

“Daniel rode with us before you met him.”

Emily stared.

“My Daniel?”

Walter nodded.

“Your Daniel.”

She shook her head.

“No. Daniel wasn’t a biker.”

“He stopped riding years ago.”

“I never saw him on a motorcycle.”

“He sold his last one when Lily was born.”

Emily looked toward her daughter.

Lily was quietly listening now.

Walter opened the box.

Inside lay an old photograph.

He handed it to Emily.

She nearly dropped it.

Daniel was twenty-three in the picture.

Young.

Thin.

Laughing.

His dark hair reached his shoulders, and he wore a worn leather jacket while sitting on an old black motorcycle.

Beside him stood Walter.

Except Walter’s beard was dark.

The two men had their arms around each other like brothers.

Emily touched Daniel’s face.

“He never showed me this.”

Walter nodded.

“He didn’t talk much about those years.”

“Why?”

“Because some of them hurt.”

Emily lowered the photograph.

Walter leaned against the pickup.

“I met Daniel when he was seventeen.”

Emily frowned.

“That young?”

“He had nowhere steady to stay.”

Walter paused.

“He was sleeping behind a repair shop outside Oklahoma City.”

Emily knew Daniel’s childhood had been difficult.
