Henry frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means the bakery needs to change.”

Henry's face hardened.

“I'm not turning it into a coffee shop for rich people.”

“I didn't say that.”

“I'm not putting fifteen-dollar sandwiches on the menu.”

“I didn't say that either.”

“Then what?”

Caleb opened another folder.

He had studied the neighborhood.

Household incomes.

Transit routes.

School enrollment.

Food access.

Local business closures.

The bakery's sales.

Henry stared at the numbers.

“You did all this?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Over the past six months.”

Henry looked at him.

“Why?”

Caleb answered quietly.

“Because this was the first place that ever made me feel like I wasn't poor.”

Henry looked away.

Caleb continued.

“You don't need to become something you're not.”

He pointed to the financial statement.

“You need refrigeration that works.”

Another page.

“A delivery system.”

Another.

“Wholesale contracts.”

Another.

“Online ordering.”

Another.

“A small commercial kitchen.”

Henry stared.

“You've thought this through.”

“I don't do anything halfway.”

Henry smiled faintly.

“Your mother would have liked that.”

Caleb's expression changed.

“You remember her?”

“Of course.”

“She remembered you.”

Henry looked up.

“What?”

“She talked about you.”

“When?”

“All the time.”

Caleb's voice softened.

“She used to say that one afternoon, when she couldn't feed her son, a man who barely knew her gave us enough food to make it through the week.”

Henry shook his head.

“It wasn't a big deal.”

“To you.”

“Yes.”

“To her, it was.”

Henry looked down.

“I never expected anything.”

“I know.”

“Then why come back?”

Caleb answered,

“Because you taught me something.”

“What?”

“That people can help without asking what they'll get in return.”

Henry was silent.

Caleb stood.

“I'm not buying the bakery.”

Henry looked relieved.

“Good.”

“I'm buying the building.”

Henry's relief disappeared.

Caleb smiled.

“And I'm giving you a lease you can actually afford.”
