Hands at his sides.

Lena sat near the wall with a cup of tea.

Her throat was still sore.

Marcus stopped when he saw her.

“You’re here?”

Lena looked at him.

“I work here.”

Marcus glanced at Nathaniel.

“This is the lesson?”

Nathaniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Marcus laughed.

“You brought her?”

“No.”

Nathaniel pointed toward the mat.

“She chose to come.”

Lena had spent the entire night thinking about Marcus.

Part of her wanted him expelled.

Part of her wanted to never see him again.

But another part remembered Nathaniel’s teachings.

Accountability mattered.

So did witnessing it.

Marcus stepped onto the mat.

“Okay. What are we doing?”

Nathaniel looked at him.

“You’re going to teach.”

Marcus blinked.

“What?”

“Teach me a beginner grappling class.”

Marcus laughed.

“You’re serious?”

“Yes.”

“That’s easy.”

“Good.”

Nathaniel sat down.

“Begin.”

Marcus began explaining a basic takedown.

Within thirty seconds, Nathaniel interrupted.

“Why are you driving your shoulder there?”

Marcus sighed.

“Because that’s how you control the movement.”

Nathaniel pointed.

“Unsafe for a beginner.”

Marcus stopped.

Nathaniel continued.

“Try again.”

Marcus explained another technique.

Nathaniel asked another question.

Then another.

Then another.

For nearly an hour, Marcus became increasingly frustrated.

Everything that sounded impressive when shouted at beginners sounded foolish when examined carefully.

“Hit harder.”

“Why?”

“Be more aggressive.”

“Why?”

“Don’t let them dominate you.”

“What does dominance have to do with learning technique?”

Marcus snapped.

“You’re twisting everything!”

Nathaniel stood.

“No.”

He walked toward him.

“I’m removing the noise.”

Marcus breathed heavily.

Nathaniel continued.

“You don’t teach people how to understand their bodies.”

“You teach them to fear failure.”

Marcus said nothing.

“You confuse pain with progress.”

Silence.

“You confuse intimidation with leadership.”

Marcus looked away.

“And you confuse winning with being right.”

That one landed.

Because somewhere deep inside Marcus knew it was true.

Nathaniel sat beside Lena.

Then he began telling Marcus something Lena had never heard before.

“When I was twenty-nine,” Nathaniel said, “I was undefeated for four years.”

Marcus looked at him.

Lena turned too.

Nathaniel rarely spoke about himself.

“I thought I was special,” he continued. “People praised me. Students copied me. Promoters called.”

Nathaniel smiled slightly.

“I loved it.”

Marcus listened.

“One night, I hurt a training partner.”

Lena frowned.

Nathaniel nodded.

“Not badly. But badly enough.”

“What happened?” Marcus asked.

“He tapped.”

The gym became silent.

“And?”

Nathaniel looked directly at Marcus.

“I didn’t release immediately.”

Marcus’s expression changed.

Nathaniel continued.

“Maybe one second.”

Lena stared at him.

“One second too long.”

Nathaniel looked toward the empty mats.

“My coach threw me out.”

Marcus frowned.

“Just like that?”

“Yes.”

Nathaniel nodded.

“He told me I could return when I understood what I had done.”

“How long?”

“Three months.”

Marcus looked surprised.

Nathaniel smiled without humor.

“Three months without training.”

Marcus shook his head.

“I would have gone crazy.”

“I did.”

Nathaniel looked at him.

“And I learned something.”

“What?”

“That talent does not make you trustworthy.”

The words hung in the air.

Nathaniel stood.

“You are talented, Marcus.”

Marcus looked up.

“Probably more talented than I ever was.”

Marcus’s expression softened slightly.

Then Nathaniel continued.

“But talent is not character.”

Marcus looked away.

“Until you understand that, you are dangerous.”

The Video

Marcus thought the worst part of the situation was over.

He was wrong.

At eleven that morning, Theo posted the video.

He had not planned to.

At least, that was what he told himself.

But he had watched Marcus hurt Lena.

He had watched everyone remain silent.

And then he had watched Nathaniel arrive.

Theo had spent the entire night replaying the footage.

Lena tapping.

Marcus holding.

“Know your place.”

Nathaniel’s voice.

“Let her go.”

Theo knew the video could destroy Marcus.

He also knew something else.

If he kept it private, Dominion might find a way to protect him.

So Theo uploaded it.
