đŹ PART 2: «The Family He Had Been Feeding Without Knowing»
Nathan stepped into the room as if his legs no longer belonged to him.
âEmily?â
The woman on the mattress lifted one shaking hand to her mouth.
She was painfully thin now, her cheeks hollow, her hair tangled around a face he still recognized instantly.
The face of the little sister who used to crawl into his bed during thunderstorms.
The sister he had mourned beside a closed coffin.
âI thought you were dead,â he choked out.
Emily gave a broken laugh that turned into a cough.
âThat was easier for them than telling you the truth.â
Lucy immediately moved in front of her mother, small shoulders tense.
âDonât upset her,â she said. âSheâs sick.â
Nathan looked at the girl.
At her torn dress.
At the empty takeout box.
At the children eating silently behind her, trying not to stare.
âLucy,â Emily whispered, crying now, âhe is my brother.â
The childâs expression changed from fear to confusion.
âMy uncle?â
Nathan pressed his fist against his mouth to contain the sob.
He had walked past this child for nights, treating her like a stranger, while she carried food home to the family stolen from him.
âWhat happened to you?â he asked Emily.
She looked toward the children.
âWhen our father died, his new wife found the will. He left half the restaurant business to me.â Her voice trembled. âShe told you I overdosed and disappeared. She told me you wanted nothing to do with me unless I signed away my share.â
Nathan stared at her.
âI never knew there was a share. I never stopped looking for you.â
Emilyâs eyes closed.
âFor years, I believed you chose the money.â
Lucy looked down slowly.
âSo Mama didnât have to be poor?â
The question was quiet.
It devastated him.
Emily began crying.
âI tried to keep them fed,â she whispered. âBut when I got sick, Lucy started going out at night. She told me she was eating at school.â
Nathan looked at his niece.
âYou gave every box away?â
Lucy tucked her dirty hands behind her back.
âThe little ones cry when theyâre hungry,â she said. âIâm bigger. I can wait longer.â
Nathan turned his face away for one second, because the sight of her trying to be proud was almost unbearable.
Then he knelt in front of her.
âNo child should have to be brave because adults failed them.â
Lucy stared at him.
âAre you going to leave now?â
He shook his head immediately.
âNo.â
She glanced at his clean navy suit and expensive coat.
âPeople always say that before they go.â
Nathan removed his coat and wrapped it gently around her narrow shoulders.
âThis time, Iâm staying long enough for you to believe me.â
Emily covered her mouth, sobbing into her trembling fingers.
Nathan crossed to the mattress and knelt beside his sister.
âI am so sorry,â he whispered. âYou were here. You were alive. And I had everything while your children were hungry.â
Emily reached for his hand.
âYou fed them,â she said weakly. âYou just didnât know they were yours to love.â
That was when Lucy finally began to cry.
She dropped to her knees beside her mother and buried her face in Nathanâs coat.
âI was scared Mama was going to die hungry,â she sobbed.
Nathan pulled her gently into his arms, then reached for Emilyâs hand too.
âShe is not fighting this alone anymore,â he promised. âNone of you are.â
The younger children had stopped eating.
One little boy held out a spoonful of rice toward Lucy.
âYou eat now,â he said softly. âUncle said weâre safe.â
Lucy looked at Nathan as if asking whether she was really allowed.
His eyes filled again.
âYes, sweetheart,â he whispered. âYou eat first tonight.â
She took the spoon with shaking fingers.
For the first time since Nathan had seen her outside the restaurant, she put food into her own mouth.
Emily watched her daughter chew, then closed her eyes as tears slid silently down her face.
Nathan held his sisterâs hand tighter.
Outside, the cold alley remained dark and forgotten.
But inside the bare little room, a child who had spent every night feeding everyone except herself finally had someone strong enough to feed her too.
