PART2 HOA PRESIDENT BURNED MY WHEAT FIELD BEFORE HARVEST — THEN THE WIND TURNED HER FIRE INTO THE END OF HER EMPIRE
Chapter 4
Smoke burned my eyes.
And I felt no triumph.
That surprised me.
In my darkest moments, I had imagined Savannah's arrogance turning against her.
I had imagined watching her finally realize she couldn't control everything.
But fire was too honest for revenge.
When houses burn, nobody wins.
Even when fools lit the match.
Lily grabbed my arm.
"Dad, we have to move!"
She was right.
We soaked the farmhouse.
The porch.
The siding.
The grass around the house.
Then we loaded the truck.
Emergency bag.
Fire gear.
Photographs.
The deed.
Everything that mattered.
Pete's truck came roaring down the road.
"Need help?"
"Get west!" I shouted. "Take the creek road!"
He nodded once.
No argument.
We drove to the old irrigation reservoir on the hill.
From there, we could see everything.
Fire engines arrived.
Then more.
Red lights moved through the smoke.
Firefighters pulled hose lines.
Deputies evacuated residents.
People ran carrying children, pets, bags, photographs.
Others froze until someone physically pulled them away.
And then I saw Savannah.
She stood near the clubhouse wearing that same red blazer.
She was waving at firefighters.
Ordering them around.
Even while the neighborhood burned, she was trying to command people.
Then the clubhouse roof collapsed.
A tower of sparks rose into the night.
Savannah staggered backward.
That was the first time I saw fear on her face.
Not anger.
Not offense.
Fear.
By dawn, my wheat field was black.
Three barns were damaged.
The farmhouse had survived.
Barely.
Cedar Ridge had suffered much worse.
Twenty-one homes destroyed.
Fourteen damaged.
The clubhouse gone.
Two maintenance trucks gone.
Seven people injured.
No deaths.
Thank God.
If anyone had died, I don't think I could have told the story the same way.
The morning after, Mark Grant arrived.
His uniform was covered in ash.
He looked at my field.
"Hell of a loss."
"Hell of a warning ignored."
He nodded.
His team began investigating.
They marked burn patterns.
Collected debris.
Photographed ignition points.
They found melted propane caps.
Fuel residue.
Fragments of burn barrels.
And on the HOA side of the fence, accelerant staining.
Diesel.
Propane.
Open flame.
During a Level Five ban.
Mark came back to me.
"You still have those emails?"
"All of them."
"Certified letters?"
"In the folder."
"Videos?"
"Multiple."
"Witnesses?"
"Pete."
He looked toward Cedar Ridge.
"Good."
"Why?"
"They're already blaming you."
I laughed.
"Of course they are."
Half an hour later, Savannah arrived with two board members and a lawyer.
A deputy stopped her before she could enter the investigation area.
"I'm president of Cedar Ridge HOA," she snapped.
The deputy looked at the burned clubhouse.
"Not today."
She saw me.
"You."
I said nothing.
She pointed toward my blackened field.
"Your property carried the fire into our community."
Mark slowly turned toward her.
"Ms. Clark, I strongly advise you not to make statements before counsel reviews the evidence."
Her lawyer touched her arm.
"Savannah."
She pulled away.
"This man refused to maintain his field. He harassed our contractors. He blocked necessary safety work. This is his fault."
Mark looked at her.
"The preliminary burn pattern indicates origin on HOA-maintained property."
"That's impossible."
"No."
He pointed toward the evidence markers.
"It's visible."
"We had authorization."
"From whom?"
Savannah stopped.
Her lawyer looked horrified.
She had no answer.
For once, the woman who always had an answer had nothing to say.
By evening, the story was on the news.
At first, the headlines were cautious.
Wildfire damages Cedar Ridge.
Farmer's wheat field destroyed.
Investigation underway.
Then the evidence started appearing.
Someone leaked a still image from my video.
Pete gave the county his photographs.
A Cedar Ridge resident provided drone footage showing Savannah's SUV near the maintenance strip while smoke rose from the ground.
Then Pam resigned.
She walked into the county office carrying a box.
Inside were internal emails.
That was the first real crack in Savannah's wall.
The emails showed she had been warned repeatedly.
By me.
By Pam.
By board members.
One board member had written:
We need written county approval before any burn.
Savannah had answered:
If we wait on the county, Morris wins. Proceed quietly.
Proceed quietly.
Those two words spread across the county.
Then came the voicemail.
Monica Hale had left it after the first illegal burn.
"We're conducting authorized vegetation management to protect the community."
Authorized by whom?
Nobody.
Five days after the fire, Mark's preliminary report arrived.
The cause was listed as unauthorized open flame ignition on HOA-maintained property.
Contributing factors included violation of the active burn ban, use of accelerants, failure to establish a firebreak, high wind conditions, and ignored warnings.
Responsible entity:
Cedar Ridge Homeowners Association.
Responsible decision-making officers:
Savannah Clark.
Darren Lowe.
Monica Hale.
I read the report on my porch.
Lily stood beside me.
"Does it feel good?"
