PART2 I Grabbed My Shotgun When HOA Patrol Trespassed — Then the Sheriff Revealed What They Were Really After
Chapter 2
“I don't know.”
Cole studied him.
“That answer bothers you.”
“It should bother both of us.”
Cole nodded.
People did not study a private access road at two in the morning without an objective.
He opened a case file that afternoon.
Before Ethan left, Cole gave him one warning.
“Don't confront them alone.”
“I wasn't planning to.”
“You had a shotgun.”
Ethan looked at him.
“How did you know?”
Cole smiled slightly.
“You were a sheriff for twelve years. You live on a mountain. Two strangers were walking around your property at two in the morning.”
Ethan said nothing.
“You had a shotgun.”
“I did.”
“Good judgment keeping it inside.”
“That was the idea.”
“Keep doing that.”
Four days later, Ethan received a letter.
It came on official-looking stationery filled with dense legal language. Pine Ridge HOA claimed that Ethan's private mountain road had fallen under its “administrative review” because it affected shared drainage infrastructure and community-adjacent emergency access.
The letter declared his road noncompliant.
An inspection would follow.
Then a remediation order.
Then fines of two hundred and fifty dollars a day.
The letter was signed by Linda Mercer, president of Pine Ridge HOA.
Ethan read it twice.
Then he drove to the county records office.
His road had been recorded as a private access easement in 1931.
Pine Ridge HOA had been incorporated in 2009.
Its boundary ended nearly two miles from his gate.
There was no shared easement.
No drainage agreement.
No legal connection.
Ethan called Sarah Bennett, a property-rights attorney he had known for years.
After reading the letter, Sarah was silent for a moment.
Then she laughed.
“This is fabricated.”
“Completely?”
“Completely.”
She explained that Pine Ridge was attempting something dangerous.
“They're trying to create jurisdiction through vocabulary.”
Sarah sent a cease-and-desist letter.
It demanded that Pine Ridge stop entering, measuring, inspecting, surveilling, or claiming authority over Ethan's land.
Linda Mercer signed for it personally.
Seventy-two hours later, cameras appeared on Ethan's ridge.
That was when Ethan stopped wondering whether Pine Ridge was making a mistake.
Mistakes usually stopped when someone explained the law.
This was getting worse.
Eyes on the Mountain
The first camera stood above the cabin.
It had been mounted on a temporary steel pole driven into rocky ground. Its lens pointed directly toward Ethan's porch.
A second watched the road.
A third watched the gate.
All three were on Ethan's land.
Installing them had required someone to carry equipment, batteries, poles, and tools nearly half a mile through the forest.
This was not accidental.
This was retaliation.
Duke sat beside Ethan as he examined the nearest camera.
“People always want to know what the dog thinks,” Ethan told him.
Duke watched a squirrel.
Apparently, civil liberties were not his primary concern.
Ethan did not remove the cameras.
That surprised Cole.
“You're leaving them there?”
“For now.”
“Why?”
“Because I want to know who comes back.”
With the sheriff's approval, investigators photographed the equipment and left it under observation. Ethan installed hidden trail cameras farther up the slope.
Then he added orange survey flags around the area.
The flags had no official purpose.
They simply looked official.
Two nights later, one of the Pine Ridge patrol officers returned.
