But he was a man built of discipline. He knew the statistics. He knew

how quickly situations like this could turn deadly. He had a daughter

watching from the pool.

"My ID is in my wallet, which is in my duffel bag on the patio

chair right over there," Marcus said slowly, pointing with a single,

deliberate finger toward the pool area. "I can walk over there and get it

for you."

"You're not going anywhere," Briggs snapped, his voice rising in

volume. "Turn around and put your hands on your head."

Marcus froze. The absurdity of the situation was staggering. He

was standing in his own backyard, wearing a bathing suit, being

treated like a hardened criminal by men sworn to protect him. "Officer,

I am telling you, I live here. If you just let me get my ID—"

"I said turn around!" Briggs yelled, his hand now unsnapping the

holster of his taser.

From the pool area, a small, frightened voice broke the tense

silence. "Daddy? What's going on?" Lily had climbed out of the water,

wrapping a tiny towel around her shivering frame, her eyes wide with

terror as she looked at the large men shouting at her father.

Marcus's heart ached at the sight of his daughter's fear. He took a

deep breath, pushing down the towering rage that threatened to

consume him. For Lily's sake, he had to de-escalate. "It's okay, baby," he

called out to her softly. "Everything is fine. Just stay right there."

He turned back to the officers, raising his hands slowly above his

head. "I am complying. But you are making a massive mistake."

Miller's thumb swiped across the screen. "C... Okay. Who am I

looking for?"

"Commissioner Davis," Marcus instructed. "Arthur Davis. The

Police Commissioner of this entire metropolitan district. He’s the

godfather to the little girl you just traumatized."

The blood completely drained from Miller's face. His hand shook

so badly he almost dropped the device. Briggs's arrogant smirk

vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated panic.

CHAPTER 5: THE CALM BEFORE THE

STORM

The phone rang twice on speakerphone. Each ring echoed like a

death knell in the ears of the two officers. The neighbors, still

recording, leaned in closer, sensing the dramatic shift in power. The

oppressive heat of the afternoon seemed to hold its breath.

“Marcus, my man!” A deep, jovial voice boomed from the phone
