The letter ran to six pages.

She did not show anyone.

Thursday marked one week since Hank sat in booth nine and told her to laugh.

Jimmy sent a picture of the booth with a reserved sign propped against the napkin holder. Under it, he had written Not for danger. Just for your break when you get back.

Sarah put the phone down and cried for reasons that had nothing to do with fear.

At noon, Velez asked them to come to the precinct again. Sarah knew from her tone that there was news. She put on the blue sweater and found her mother's ring hand trembling when they stood by the car.

She took it for the whole drive.

The remains were Michael's.

Identification had been made through dental records and additional testing. Velez explained enough for them to understand without forcing details they had not asked to hear. The medical findings supported a violent death. The investigation was being treated accordingly.

Diana bent forward with a sound Sarah had never heard from any person.

Hank stood, then sat, unable to find a useful shape for himself.

Sarah looked at the detective's mouth and waited for the sentence to become less final.

It did not.

Velez stayed with them. A family advocate came in, introduced herself as Elise, and explained that they did not have to make every decision at once. There would be a process before Michael could be released. There would be paperwork, costs to discuss, people who could help.

Sarah thought, Even this has forms.

Then she was grateful, because forms were something a hand could fill in when a mind could not hold the whole thing.

Diana asked whether she could see him.

Elise answered gently. They could talk about what would be possible and what the family might want. There was no correct choice.

Hank went outside before the meeting ended.

Sarah found him near a low wall, his helmet on the ground beside him.

He was crying without sound.

She stood next to him. For once she did not ask a question.

After a while, he said, β€œI keep hearing him say seven.”

Sarah looked at the traffic moving beyond the lot.

β€œYou're here now.”

β€œIt isn't enough.”

β€œNo.”

The answer hurt him. She could see it.

Then she added, β€œIt still matters.”

He covered his face with both hands.

Sarah sat on the wall beside him and waited until he could breathe normally again.

She did not call him Dad. She did not give him a title that could make the past neater. He was Hank. For the first time, that seemed like a person she might choose to know rather than a role she had been forced to accept.

Two days later, Cutter tried to make his own choice for her.

The message came through an unfamiliar number while Sarah was helping Ruth fold sheets. It contained a photograph of Diana outside the grocery store from the previous month. Below it were six words.

This can stop if you cooperate.

Sarah's first instinct was to hide the phone.

The impulse horrified her. She understood then how her mother had started. Not with a grand decision to lie forever, but with one frightened second in which keeping danger to herself felt like keeping it away from someone she loved.

She put the phone on the table.

β€œRuth.”

The older woman looked at the screen, then at Sarah.

β€œYou did the right thing.”

β€œI haven't done anything yet.”

β€œYou showed me.”

They called Velez. Sarah did not reply until the detective told her they had saved the message and discussed whether any response would help. Velez did not ask Sarah to play bait. She asked whether Sarah was willing to let investigators document further contact if it came.

Sarah said yes.

Then she said, β€œI don't want my mother finding out from somebody else.”

Diana was in the next room. Sarah went to her and explained it herself.

Her mother's face drained of color. For a moment Sarah saw the woman from the old apartment, a crib behind her and a stranger's hand on the rail.

Then Diana took a breath.

β€œWhat do we do?” she asked.

Not what will I decide for us.

What do we do.

Sarah sat beside her.

β€œWe tell them everything.”

Hank came home from meeting his lawyer and found the detective at the kitchen table. He saw the photograph, listened to the facts, and went so still that Sarah knew anger had arrived before fear.
