Racist Officer Forces Black Veteran to Ground in Park — Then Saw the Contractor ID Hanging From His Neck
Chapter 2
Officer Tyler Mitchell was only three years out of the police academy, but he already walked with a swagger that suggested he owned the city streets. Mitchell had a reputation in the precinct—one that his superiors occasionally warned him about, though never formally disciplined him for. He was aggressive, quick to jump to conclusions, and harbored deep-seated, often unconscious biases that colored the way he policed his beat.
Mitchell had been assigned the early morning park patrol, a detail he openly despised. He considered it a waste of his talents, babysitting squirrels and chasing away homeless people. As he cruised along the park’s perimeter road in his cruiser, he sipped a lukewarm energy drink and scanned the treeline.
That was when he saw him. Down by the creek, partially obscured by the morning mist and the low-hanging branches of a weeping willow. A large Black man in a faded, dirty military-style jacket and a beanie, digging in the dirt and loitering under the bridge.
To Mitchell, the narrative wrote itself instantly, bypassing any logic or critical observation. Vagrant. Trespasser. Probably burying something illegal or looking for a place to set up a camp.
Mitchell didn't notice the expensive leather notebook. He didn't notice the meticulously unrolled blueprints. He didn't consider that it was 6:30 AM on a Tuesday and the man was calmly writing. Mitchell’s bias acted as a heavy filter, blocking out any context that didn't fit his preconceived notion of who belonged in this affluent part of the city and who didn't.
He parked his cruiser abruptly, throwing it into park so hard the transmission clicked loudly. He didn't radio it in. He wanted to handle this himself, to assert dominance, to start his shift with a "clean-up" of his sector. He unclipped the retention strap on his holster out of habit, stepped out of the car, and began the steep descent down the grassy bank toward the creek, his hand resting aggressively on his utility belt.
"Hey! You! Freeze right there!" Mitchell’s voice boomed through the quiet morning, shattering the tranquility like a thrown brick.
Marcus jumped slightly, his pencil snapping against the paper. He turned around to see a young police officer marching down the hill, face flushed red, posture rigid and hostile.
Decades of military training instantly kicked in. Marcus’s heart rate spiked, but his exterior remained remarkably calm. He knew the unwritten rules of survival in America as a Black man encountering an aggressive police officer. Keep your hands visible. Speak clearly. Make no sudden movements.
