“He goes alone.”

Marcus immediately turned.

“No.”

“You received the message.”

“That’s exactly why I’m not going.”

Bennett stepped closer.

“Cole.”

“No.”

Marcus’s voice became harder.

“Eleanor already used me as part of her plan. Daniel is trying to do the same thing. I’m done letting everyone else decide what I’m supposed to do.”

Bennett stared at him.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Then, unexpectedly, Bennett smiled.

A small smile.

“Good.”

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

“What?”

Bennett picked up the file.

“Then we finally have a chance.”

Marcus looked at him.

“A chance to do what?”

Bennett pointed toward the black card.

“To bring Eleanor home.”

At eleven forty-five, Marcus stood outside the old underground entrance.

The building above him had been mostly emptied.

The rain had stopped.

Only the sound of water dripping from the streets broke the silence.

Marcus checked his watch.

Fifteen minutes.

He had been told to come alone.

And technically, he had.

Thomas was somewhere else.

Bennett was somewhere else.

At least, that was what Daniel Clark believed.

Marcus held the black access card in his hand.

He entered the tunnel.

Each step echoed through the darkness.

At the far end, the sealed steel door was open.

Beyond it, a dim light glowed.

Marcus walked forward.

His heart beat harder with every step.

Then he heard a voice.

“Right on time.”

Marcus stopped.

Daniel Clark stepped out from the shadows.

For the first time, Marcus saw his face clearly.

He was older than Marcus had expected.

Mid-forties.

Sharp features.

Gray beginning to show at his temples.

He looked less like a criminal and more like the executive everyone would expect him to be.

Daniel smiled.

“You have the card.”

Marcus tightened his hand around it.

“Where’s Eleanor?”

Daniel stepped aside.

Eleanor was sitting in a chair beside an old metal door.

She looked directly at Marcus.

“Officer Cole.”

Marcus exhaled.

“You’re okay?”

“I’m fine.”

Daniel laughed.

“You see? I told you she was safe.”

Marcus took a step forward.

Daniel immediately raised one hand.

“Stop.”

Marcus stopped.

Daniel looked at the card.

“Give it to me.”

Marcus looked at Eleanor.

Then back at Daniel.

“What’s inside the archive?”

Daniel’s smile faded.

“Does it matter?”

“Yes.”

Daniel stared at him.

Marcus continued.

“Because I’m not giving you anything until I know what I’m actually handing over.”

For a moment, Daniel said nothing.

Then he slowly nodded.

“Good.”

Marcus frowned.

Daniel smiled again.

“You really have changed since this morning.”

A metallic click echoed through the tunnel.

Suddenly, the steel door behind Eleanor opened.

Marcus’s eyes widened.

A hidden room appeared beyond it.

Shelves.

Old files.

A metal cabinet.

And at the center of the room—

A large security screen.

The screen turned on.

Richard Bennett appeared.

Marcus spun around.

Bennett stood at the far end of the tunnel with two officers.

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

For the first time, Marcus saw genuine anger in his face.

“You weren’t alone.”

Marcus looked back at him.

“No.”

Daniel reached toward his pocket.

Marcus reacted instantly.

But Eleanor shouted first.

“Marcus!”

Daniel pulled out a small remote.

And before anyone could stop him, he pressed the button.

A deep mechanical sound echoed beneath the building.

The floor trembled.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Thomas’s voice suddenly came through Marcus’s radio.

“Marcus!”

Marcus grabbed it.

“Thomas?”

“There’s a problem!”

Another violent shake moved through the tunnel.

The lights flickered.

Thomas’s voice became distorted.

“Get out of there! The entire lower level—”

The signal disappeared.

Darkness swallowed the tunnel.

And somewhere behind the walls, something enormous began to collapse.

The darkness lasted only a few seconds.

But to Marcus Cole, it felt much longer.

The floor shook beneath his feet as a violent grinding sound echoed through the underground chamber. Dust poured from the ceiling. Somewhere behind the walls, metal screamed against concrete.

“Move!” Bennett shouted.

Emergency lights flickered weakly to life.

Marcus immediately looked toward Eleanor.

She was still seated near the archive door, but Daniel Clark had moved closer to her.

His hand was wrapped around her arm.

“Daniel!” Bennett shouted. “Let her go!”

Daniel laughed.

The sound was almost lost beneath the collapsing machinery.

“You still think you’re in charge, Richard.”

Another explosion of dust burst from the ceiling.

Marcus stepped forward.

Daniel tightened his grip on Eleanor.

“Stay where you are.”

Marcus stopped.

For the first time since entering the tunnel, he saw fear in Eleanor’s eyes.

Not fear for herself.

Fear for Marcus.

“Officer Cole,” she said sharply, “do not let him control the situation.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Still giving orders.”

“I’m sixty-eight years old,” Eleanor replied. “I’ve been giving orders since before you learned how to lie convincingly.”

For one brief second, Marcus almost smiled.

Daniel did not.

His expression hardened.

“You think this is funny?”

“No,” Eleanor said. “I think it’s sad.”

The floor trembled again.

Daniel glanced toward the archive.

Marcus noticed.

That was where Daniel wanted to go.

The remote had not been intended to kill them.

It had been intended to create chaos.

To force everyone away from the archive.

Marcus suddenly understood.

“He’s not trying to bring the building down,” he said.

Daniel’s eyes moved toward him.

Marcus continued.

“You triggered the old demolition supports.”

Bennett looked at Marcus.

“What?”

“The service tunnel was scheduled for renovation,” Marcus said quickly. “There are emergency structural systems. He knew which section would collapse.”

Daniel smiled slowly.

“Good.”

Marcus stared at him.

Daniel continued.

“You’re finally paying attention.”

The words hit Marcus harder than he expected.

The entire day had been about attention.

About assumptions.

About seeing what was actually in front of him.

Daniel had counted on Marcus being distracted in the lobby.

Then suspicious of Bennett.

Then confused by Eleanor.

Every move had been designed to make Marcus look in the wrong direction.

But now Marcus was beginning to see the pattern.

“Thomas!” Marcus shouted into his radio.

Static.

Then a broken voice came through.

“Marcus… hear me?”

“Where are you?”

“Outside the lower access… backup is coming.”

Marcus exhaled.

Thomas was alive.

“Listen to me. Daniel triggered a controlled collapse.”

“I know,” Thomas said. “I found the building plans.”

Marcus looked toward the damaged ceiling.

“How much time?”

There was silence.

Then Thomas answered.

“Not much.”

Daniel suddenly pulled Eleanor toward the archive.

Marcus moved.

Daniel pressed the remote again.

Nothing happened.

Marcus stopped.

Daniel looked at it.

His confidence vanished.

Bennett raised his weapon.

“Drop it.”

Daniel threw the remote onto the floor.

But then he did something Marcus had not expected.

He pushed Eleanor away.

Marcus caught her.

Daniel ran.

“After him!” Bennett shouted.

Marcus was already moving.

Daniel disappeared through the open archive door.

Inside, shelves had been overturned. Files covered the floor. At the far end stood a metal staircase leading to another passage.

“He planned this,” Marcus said.

Eleanor steadied herself beside the wall.

“Yes.”

Marcus turned.

“You knew?”

She looked at him.

“I knew there was another exit.”

Marcus stared.

Even now, she was still keeping secrets.

Eleanor saw the anger in his face.

“There will be time for that later.”

“No,” Marcus said. “No more later.”

The building shook again.

A heavy piece of concrete crashed onto the floor behind them.

Eleanor looked toward the exit.

“Then you can be angry with me after we survive.”

Marcus wanted to argue.

Instead, he ran after Daniel.

The hidden passage climbed sharply beneath the building.

Daniel was faster than Marcus expected.

Every few seconds, Marcus caught a glimpse of his dark suit disappearing around another corner.

“Daniel!” Marcus shouted.

No answer.

Behind him, Bennett followed with Eleanor.
