Caleb stepped forward.

"You're saying someone switched the reports?"

Rachel nodded.

"Yes."

I felt as though the floor had shifted beneath me.

"Then whose DNA was tested?"

Rachel closed her eyes.

"Mine and Cole's."

I stared at her.

"And the result?"

"Negative."

Nobody spoke.

I looked toward Emma again.

She was drawing a house.

A small house with a yellow roof, three windows, and four stick figures standing outside.

"Then who is her father?"

Rachel swallowed.

"Daniel."

My father sat down heavily.

Caleb looked as if someone had struck him.

And I suddenly understood why the anonymous caller had mentioned Daniel.

But I didn't understand why the DNA report had been falsified.

Or why Rachel had brought Emma to our bakery.

Or why the little girl had been instructed to find me.

"Tell me everything," I said.

Rachel nodded.

She took Emma into the living room with Dana, who had arrived earlier to check on us.

Once they were gone, Rachel began.

Eleven years earlier, after Caleb disappeared, Rachel had been working with Daniel.

She had met him through the underground network Marcus had created.

Daniel had been helping vulnerable people escape dangerous situations, but he had also been collecting evidence against his father.

He knew about the stolen vehicles.

He knew about the false identities.

And he knew that Marcus had begun accepting money from people who wanted witnesses and victims to vanish permanently.

Daniel wanted to expose the operation.

Rachel wanted to help him.

They became close.

Eventually, she discovered she was pregnant.

But Daniel disappeared before she could tell him.

"Why?" I asked.

Rachel looked at Caleb.

"Because Marcus found out."

She explained that Daniel had discovered his father was preparing to move a group of people across state lines.

One of those people was a young woman who had witnessed a murder.

Daniel tried to help her.

The plan failed.

The woman vanished.

Daniel was blamed.

Marcus told him that the authorities were looking for him and that the only way to survive was to leave the country.

But Daniel suspected his father had arranged everything.

He contacted Rachel and told her he would return once he had gathered enough evidence.

He never did.

Rachel spent months trying to locate him.

Then, shortly after Emma was born, someone sent her a message.

Daniel is dead. Stop looking.

There was no body.

No funeral.

No official record.

Just those four words.

"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked Rachel.

She looked directly at me.

"Because you weren't part of it."

"I was part of it the moment you walked into my life."

"I know."

"Did you ever love me?"

Rachel didn't answer immediately.

Then she whispered, "Yes."

I looked away.

"That's not enough."

"I know."

"Why did Emma think I was her father?"

"Because I told her you were the person who could protect her."

"That's not the same thing."

"No."

"Did you tell her Daniel was her father?"

"Not until recently."

I felt anger rising again.

"Then why did she recognize Caleb?"

Rachel looked toward the living room.

"Because Daniel had a photograph of Caleb."

"Why?"

"Because Caleb helped him."

Caleb frowned.

"I never met Daniel."

Rachel shook her head.

"Not in person. But you sent him a message once."

I turned toward my brother.

"What message?"

Caleb looked confused.

Rachel continued.

"Eleven years ago, shortly before you disappeared, you sent a letter to the network asking for help. Daniel received it."

Caleb stared at her.

"What did it say?"

"That someone was threatening your family. That you needed a way out."

Caleb slowly lowered himself into a chair.

He remembered writing the letter.

He had never received an answer.

But Daniel had apparently read it.

He had kept a photograph of Caleb beside his desk.

And he had told Rachel that if anything happened to him, she should find Caleb.

That was why Emma recognized him.

Not because she knew him personally.

Because she had seen the photograph many times.

"Then why did you tell Emma not to trust the person who came with Caleb?" I asked.

Rachel looked toward the window.

"Because I didn't know whether Caleb was still working with Marcus."

Caleb shook his head.

"I never was."

"I know that now."

"But you sent Aaron to find me."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I had no one else."

Rachel's voice broke.

"I was frightened, Caleb. I had been watching people disappear for years. I didn't know who I could trust."

I sat down.

For the first time, I began to understand the full extent of her fear.

She had spent eleven years raising a child while believing the people who knew the truth could be dangerous.

But understanding didn't erase the damage.

It simply gave it a shape.

"Where is Daniel now?" I asked.

Rachel shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Did you ever see him again?"

"No."

"Did he contact you?"

"Not directly."

"What does that mean?"

She reached into her handbag.

Then she removed a small envelope.
