She Took in a Lost Biker for One Night
Chapter 4
"I'm a guest," Rubble said softly. The quietness of his voice made it infinitely more terrifying. "And the lady asked you to leave."
Craig took a slow step backward, shaking his head at Lawson. I'm not dying for your water rights, his posture screamed.
Lawson swallowed hard. "Tomorrow at noon, Sylvie. The sheriff will be with me. Your biker friend won't stop a court order."
Lawson retreated to his Escalade, and within seconds, the vehicles were tearing back down the driveway. Sylvie let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding, her knees weak.
The rest of the day passed in a tense, suffocating silence. Rubble finished patching his bike's tire using sheer stubborn will. When dusk fell, he walked into the kitchen, his boots heavy on the linoleum. He placed a burner phone on the counter.
"Lawson comes back tomorrow at noon?" Rubble asked.
"With the county sheriff," Sylvie confirmed, staring into her cold tea. "And a court order. You standing on the porch with a wrench won't stop the law, Rubble. You should leave before they get here. I don't want you catching a charge for my sake."
Rubble picked up his silver Zippo, turning it over in his calloused hands. "You saved my life, Sylvie. Out on Route 50, I would've bled out in the sand. Oakland doesn't forget a debt."
He didn't say another word. He just walked out to the porch and made a phone call.
The Next Day — 11:45 AM
Sylvie sat on her porch, the Remington 870 resting across her lap. She had packed two duffel bags. She was ready to lose her home, but she wasn't going to go quietly. Rubble sat on a wooden rocking chair beside her, calmly smoking a cigarette.
At 11:50 AM, the familiar black Escalade appeared on the horizon, followed by two White Pine County Sheriff cruisers. They drove arrogantly up the gravel path, ready to claim their prize.
But as the vehicles neared the property line, a new sound began to build. It started as a low rumble, vibrating through the dry earth, growing steadily into a deafening, thunderous roar.
Lawson slammed on his brakes.
