"That section is meant for repeated disturbances—parties, loud music, ongoing construction."
"It is repeated. She does it several times a week."
Richard leaned back, sighing. "Nancy, I understand it bothers you, but we cannot ban ordinary maintenance. Talk to her calmly. If you believe there is an immediate, severe disturbance, call the non-emergency police line."
Nancy heard only part of his answer. The proper channel. She walked away believing the board had validated her concerns but simply lacked the courage to enforce them.
As a former teacher, Nancy was used to managing classrooms by insisting that every disruption receive an immediate response. Being ignored had always affected her deeply. Over the next week, her fixation grew. She began logging the exact times Elena used the machine. Sunday: 4:42 PM. Tuesday: twelve minutes. The hum of the motor became a physical weight pressing against her frayed nerves.
Sunday afternoon arrived exactly one week after the board meeting. The morning had been a disaster. Harold had fallen while dressing, yet he stubbornly refused to let Nancy call their daughter or use his walker. By late afternoon, Nancy’s nerves felt scraped entirely raw.
At 5:03 PM, the leaf blower started.
Harold was asleep in his recliner. Nancy stood in her kitchen, listening to the mechanical roar rising and falling beyond the glass. She tried to ignore it. She made tea. She turned on the radio. Nothing worked. The machine only seemed to grow louder, mocking her inability to maintain peace in her own home.
Finally, she buttoned her blue cardigan and marched across the damp lawn.
Elena was on her patio, wearing ear protection, blowing damp leaves toward the fence. Nancy stopped outside the gate. "Elena!" she shouted. There was no response.
Nancy unlatched the gate and stepped inside. "Elena, I am talking to you."
Elena finally looked up and pulled away one side of her ear protection. "What?"
