Caroline continued.
"Law enforcement was contacted."
Someone asked why.
Caroline replied, "Because we had reason to believe something unusual was happening."
Marcus almost stood.
But he remained seated.
Then a woman near the front raised her hand.
"What exactly happened?"
Caroline paused.
"There was no criminal activity identified."
The room became quiet.
"So why are we talking about it?" another resident asked.
Caroline looked toward Marcus.
"Because we cannot ignore warning signs."
Marcus finally stood.
Everyone turned toward him.
"I'd like to clarify something."
Caroline frowned.
Marcus spoke calmly.
"The people you saw were my friends."
Someone murmured.
"They were invited."
Another resident asked, "Was there a disturbance?"
"No."
"Was anyone threatened?"
"No."
"Did the police find anything illegal?"
"No."
Marcus looked at Caroline.
"The only unusual thing that happened was someone entering my backyard with two police officers because she decided my guests looked suspicious."
The room went silent.
Caroline's face reddened.
"That's not what happened."
Marcus looked at her.
"Then tell everyone what happened."
Caroline began speaking rapidly.
"I was concerned because I didn't recognize some of the people."
Marcus nodded.
"That's true."
She continued.
"And there were several cars."
"Also true."
"And I believed the gathering could become disruptive."
Marcus asked:
"Did you have evidence of that?"
She didn't answer.
The older man sitting near the clubhouse door finally spoke.
"I think we need to be careful."
Everyone looked at him.
"Careful about what?" Caroline asked.
"About treating someone's ordinary activity as suspicious simply because we don't recognize it."
Marcus looked down.
He hadn't expected anyone to say it.
The man continued.
"We all own our homes. We should be able to have guests."
Several people nodded.
Caroline looked around the room.
For the first time, she realized the story was no longer under her control.
The following morning, Marcus received a message from his daughter.
"Dad, call me."
He immediately called.
