Marcus served as a consultant.

Daniel became its director.

On the day the new unit opened, Daniel stood before the officers.

He held an old badge in his hand.

The same type that had once belonged to Marcus.

He looked at the group.

"Every badge represents authority."

He paused.

"But authority isn't the metal."

He held it up.

"It's what the person wearing it chooses to do."

The room was silent.

Daniel continued.

"People will judge us by the mistakes we make."

He lowered the badge.

"But more importantly, they will judge us by what we do after those mistakes are exposed."

He looked around.

"Never forget who the badge belongs to."

Nobody moved.

Then Marcus stepped forward.

Daniel handed him the badge.

Marcus stared at it.

For twelve years, the badge had represented everything he had lost.

Now it represented something different.

A second chance.

Several months later, Daniel drove along the same highway.

It was late.

The streets were nearly empty.

The same streetlights illuminated the road.

The same darkness stretched across the horizon.

He passed the place where Officer Reed had stopped him.

Daniel slowed.

For a moment, he remembered everything.

The flashing lights.

The handcuffs.

The questions.

The badge beneath the boot.

The black SUV.

The discovery beneath the bridge.

Marcus.

Elena.

His father.

Everything.

Daniel pulled onto the shoulder.

He stepped out of his car.

The night air was cold.

He walked to the exact spot where the badge had been found.

For a moment, he simply stood there.

Then he looked toward the city.

Lights stretched across the horizon.

Thousands of homes.

Thousands of people.

Thousands of lives.

Most would never know how close they had come to losing faith in the people sworn to protect them.

Daniel reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small metal badge.

It wasn't his official badge.

It was an old Special Integrity Division badge.

Marcus had given it to him.

Daniel held it beneath the streetlight.

The engraving was visible.

He remembered the first night.

He remembered looking down and seeing the badge beneath the officer's boot.

At the time, he thought the badge represented corruption.

Now he understood something else.

A badge could represent many things.

Power.

Responsibility.

Fear.

Trust.

Failure.

Redemption.

The object itself was meaningless.

The person wearing it gave it meaning.
