Jack's eyes filled with tears.
"So do I."
The truth finally began emerging from a place Claire had never thought to look.
An old storage unit.
Jack had rented it decades ago.
He had forgotten about it.
Inside were boxes from his motorcycle shop.
Invoices.
Photographs.
Receipts.
Old newspapers.
And one locked metal case.
Jack opened it with a key he had carried for years.
Inside was a stack of documents.
Claire picked up the first.
A bank transfer.
Twenty thousand dollars.
From Jack's account.
To an account belonging to a company called North Ridge Holdings.
The date was October 13th.
The day before the crash.
Claire looked at Jack.
"Who owns this?"
"I don't know."
She picked up another document.
Michael Reed's signature.
Then another.
Margaret Bennett's signature.
Claire's stomach turned.
"They were working together."
Jack nodded.
"Looks like it."
"But why?"
They found the answer in an old ledger.
North Ridge Holdings had been used to move money through several businesses.
Jack's motorcycle shop was one of them.
But he hadn't known.
Michael had been using the shop to hide transactions.
Margaret had discovered it.
Then she had become involved.
Jack had unknowingly become the person standing between them and exposure.
The twenty thousand dollars wasn't a debt.
It was a payment.
Jack had been trying to buy his way out of a problem he didn't understand.
Claire stared at the papers.
"Mom wasn't trying to protect me."
Jack shook his head.
"I don't know."
"She used you."
"Maybe."
"She lied to me."
"Yes."
"She made me hate you."
Jack looked away.
"That may have been the point."
Claire began crying.
Jack didn't touch her.
He simply stood there.
After a while, Claire whispered:
"I spent twenty-six years thinking you didn't love me."
Jack closed his eyes.
"I loved you every day."
"I waited for you."
"I know."
"I thought you chose not to come."
"I tried."
"I thought I wasn't important enough."
Jack's voice broke.
"You were the only thing that mattered."
Claire looked at him.
"Then why didn't you find me?"
"I tried."
"How?"
"I hired investigators."
"For how long?"
"Years."
"And?"
"They kept telling me you had moved."
"Where?"
"Different states."
Claire realized something.
Someone had deliberately moved her records.
Someone had erased her trail.
Jack had been searching for a ghost.
Then Claire found one final document.
A birth certificate.
Not hers.
Daniel Reed.
Born October 8th.
Twenty-six years earlier.
Mother: Margaret Bennett.
Father: Unknown.
Claire stared.
Her mother had a child before the crash.
A son.
Daniel.
But why had she never known?
Then another document fell from the folder.
An adoption record.
Daniel had been placed with another family.
The adoptive father's name was:
Thomas Reed.
Claire froze.
"Reed."
Jack nodded.
"Michael's father."
Claire looked at him.
"So Daniel was Michael's son."
Jack nodded.
"And Mom gave him away."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"We need to find Daniel."
They did.
Daniel Reed was alive.
He lived in another state.
He was forty-three years old.
He had no idea who Margaret Bennett was.
No idea who Jack was.
And no idea that he had a sister.
Claire called him.
"Hello?"
His voice was cautious.
"Is this Daniel Reed?"
"Yes."
"My name is Claire Bennett."
Silence.
"How can I help you?"
Claire closed her eyes.
"I'm your sister."
Nothing.
Then:
"What?"
Claire told him everything.
Not all at once.
Slowly.
Carefully.
When she finished, Daniel didn't speak for nearly a minute.
Then he asked:
"Do you have proof?"
"Yes."
"Pictures?"
"Yes."
"Records?"
"Yes."
"Why now?"
Claire looked at Jack.
"Because someone is threatening us."
Daniel's voice changed.
"What kind of threat?"
"Someone knows about you."
Another silence.
Then Daniel whispered:
"I think I know who."
Claire's heart stopped.
"Who?"
"My adoptive father."
"But he's dead."
"I know."
"Then how—"
"Before he died, he told me something."
"What?"
Daniel breathed deeply.
"He said if anyone ever came looking for me, I should tell them one thing."
Claire waited.
Daniel said:
"Your mother didn't give you away to protect herself."
"Then why?"
"She gave you away because someone was hunting her."
Claire's blood went cold.
"Who?"
Daniel answered:
"The same person who has been looking for you."
Daniel arrived two days later.
Claire expected a stranger.
Instead, she saw a man who looked vaguely familiar.
Same eyes.
Same shape of the mouth.
Different life.
Different face.
But there was something undeniable.
Family.
Daniel stood across from Claire.
Neither spoke.
Then he smiled nervously.
"So..."
Claire laughed through tears.
"So."
They hugged.
It was awkward.
Then it wasn't.
They held each other tightly.
"I can't believe you're real," Claire whispered.
Daniel laughed.
"I was about to say the same thing."
Jack stood several feet away.
Daniel turned.
Their eyes met.
"You must be Jack."
Jack nodded.
"Yes."
Daniel studied him.
"My adoptive father hated you."
"I know."
"He said you destroyed our family."
"I didn't."
Daniel nodded.
"I believe you."
Jack swallowed.
"I wish I'd known about you."
Daniel looked at him.
"I wish I'd known about you."
For the first time, Jack seemed unable to hide his emotions.
He looked away.
Noah came into the room.
Daniel smiled.
"And you're Noah."
Noah nodded.
"Are you my uncle?"
Daniel smiled.
"Apparently."
Noah considered him.
"That's cool."
Everyone laughed.
For a few minutes, the family felt almost normal.
Then Daniel placed a folder on the table.
"I found this before I came."
Claire opened it.
Inside were documents belonging to his adoptive father.
There was a name.
Victor Hale.
Claire didn't recognize it.
Jack did.
His face changed.
"Who is he?"
Jack stared at the document.
"Victor was the man who controlled North Ridge Holdings."
Claire felt cold.
"The man behind everything?"
"Yes."
"Is he alive?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
