Part 1: The Man Outside His Own Gate

“Throw him out before Mr. Lancaster sees him.”

The order came through the iron gate at 7:12 on a cold October morning.

The old man standing outside didn't move.

His shoulders were bent beneath a filthy brown coat. Rainwater dripped from the edge of a faded wool cap. Mud covered both knees of his trousers, and one boot had been wrapped with silver duct tape where the sole had split.

He looked exhausted.

Hungry.

Poor.

Exactly as he intended.

Beyond the gate stood Blackwood Manor, one of the largest private estates in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Twenty-one acres.

Three guesthouses.

An indoor pool.

A private library.

A twelve-car garage.

Gardens maintained by six full-time groundskeepers.

And a limestone mansion overlooking Long Island Sound that had appeared twice in architectural magazines.

The homeless man stared through the gate at the house.

Then at the security officer walking toward him.

Derek Shaw, forty-seven, head of residential security.

Six feet three.

Close-cropped gray hair.

Black uniform.

Polished shoes.

A $9,000 Swiss watch that immediately caught the old man's attention.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Derek stopped on the other side of the gate.

“What did I tell you?”

The old man lowered his eyes.

“I haven't eaten since yesterday.”

“Not my problem.”

“Maybe the kitchen has something they're throwing away.”

Derek laughed.

“You think this is a soup kitchen?”

“No, sir.”

“Then move.”

The old man gripped the iron bars.

“Just a piece of bread.”

Derek stepped closer.

“You people never listen.”

The old man's eyes sharpened beneath the shadow of his cap.

You people.

He remembered those words.

Derek pressed a button.

The pedestrian gate clicked open.

For one moment the old man thought the security chief might actually help him.

Instead, Derek stepped outside, grabbed him by the sleeve, and pulled him away from the entrance.

“Off the property.”

“I'm already outside the property.”

“Then get farther outside.”

The old man stumbled.

His palm struck wet gravel.

Pain shot through his wrist.

Derek looked down at him.

No concern.

No hesitation.

Just irritation.

Then another voice came from behind the gate.

“Stop.”

Derek turned.

A woman stood halfway down the driveway.

She wore a plain gray housekeeping uniform beneath a cheap navy cardigan.

Her dark hair was tied into a simple ponytail.

In her hands was a breakfast tray.

Coffee.

Fruit.

Toast.

A silver pot.

She couldn't have been older than thirty-two.

Her name was Elena Morales.

And she had just made the most expensive decision of her life.

“Elena,” Derek said.

She looked at the old man on the ground.

“What happened?”

“Nothing that concerns you.”

“He fell.”

“He was trespassing.”

“He's outside the gate.”

Derek's jaw tightened.

“Take that tray inside.”

Elena didn't move.

The old man watched her carefully.

He had seen Elena before.

Many times.

She had worked inside Blackwood Manor for fourteen months.

He knew her employee file.

Thirty-two.

Widowed.

One daughter.

Previous employment at a hotel in Stamford.

No disciplinary record.

Never late.

Never requested a raise.

Her annual salary was less than what the owner of Blackwood Manor sometimes spent on a single dinner for investors.

But Elena didn't know the homeless man knew any of that.

Because she didn't recognize him.
