The officer looked up.

"Ms. Collins?"

She didn't answer.

"Brenda?"

Her voice was barely audible.

"I've never seen that."

But Ethan knew she was lying.

He didn't know how he knew.

He simply did.

Because her eyes weren't on the metal box.

They were on the cedar tree beside it.

And beneath that tree, half-hidden by the soil, was a narrow strip of concrete.

Something much larger was buried beneath the yard.

Something that had been hidden for a very long time.

Walter Pierce arrived before noon.

He carried an old leather case and walked with the deliberate patience of a man who had spent most of his life measuring land.

He examined Ethan's survey.

Then he examined the trench.

Then he looked at Brenda.

"Still fighting over this line?"

Brenda crossed her arms.

"We're not fighting."

Walter smiled.

"You called the police."

"I was protecting my property."

Walter sighed.

He knelt beside the hole.

"I haven't seen one of these in years."

Ethan looked at him.

"You know what it is?"

"Not exactly."

Walter brushed dirt from the metal.

"The initials."

"B.C.W.?"

"Yes."

"What does it mean?"

Walter didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked toward the cedar trees.

"Who owns the old parcel behind your property?"

Ethan frowned.

"No one. It's county land."

"Was it always?"

"I think so."

Walter stood.

"No."

"What do you mean?"

"It used to belong to Bellwood County Water."

Ethan looked at Brenda.

She said nothing.

Walter continued.

"Before the county reorganized the utility district."

"When?"

"Thirty years ago."

Ethan stared at the metal box.

"Why would a water authority have a box under my fence?"

Walter shook his head.

"It wasn't just a water authority."

"What was it?"

"Drainage, emergency storage, utility access."

He paused.

"And something else."

"What?"

Walter looked at Brenda.

"Your father worked for the county, didn't he?"

Her face tightened.

"Yes."

"What did he do?"

"Maintenance."

Walter nodded.

"He would know."

Brenda's voice became cold.

"My father has been dead for eleven years."

"I know."

"Then stop asking about him."

Walter looked at Ethan.

"There's something you should know."

Brenda stepped forward.

"No."

Walter ignored her.

"When Bellwood was developing this neighborhood, there was a dispute about underground infrastructure."

Ethan listened.

"Developers wanted to build houses closer to the creek."

"Why?"

"Because those lots were valuable."

"Was it dangerous?"

Walter hesitated.

"Potentially."

"Why?"

"Because the ground was unstable."

Brenda snapped:

"That's enough."

Walter looked at her.

"You knew this day would come."

Ethan turned.

"What does that mean?"

Brenda's face had gone pale.

She didn't answer.

Walter closed his leather case.

"Call me tonight."

"Why?"

"Because I need to show you something."

Ethan watched him leave.

Brenda remained beside the fence.

"You're going to make a mistake," she said.

"What mistake?"

"Digging."

"Why?"

"Because some things were buried for a reason."

Then she walked away.

That afternoon, Ethan called the county records office.

He requested historical property maps.

The clerk found three.

The newest showed his property exactly as he knew it.

The second showed an older boundary.

The oldest showed something completely different.

A narrow corridor ran through what was now his backyard.

The corridor connected to a concrete structure marked:

B.C.W. ACCESS 12

Ethan stared.

Access 12.

The box in his yard.

He called Walter.

"I found the map."

Walter's voice became serious.

"Then you know."

"Know what?"

"The county didn't remove that corridor."

"What?"

"They simply stopped recording it."

Ethan sat down.

"That's not possible."

"It happened."

"Why?"

"Because somebody wanted those lots sold."

"Who?"

Walter sighed.

"That's the question."

Ethan looked out the window.

Across the street, Brenda was standing beside her car.

She was watching him.

Their eyes met.

She quickly looked away.

Ethan called her.
