see the malicious intent behind it.

One evening, assistant coach Rachel Kim had finally

seen enough.

She cornered Henry near the water fountain.

“You need to tell him to stop,” Rachel said, her arms

crossed.

Henry looked across the gym toward Derek, who was

shadowboxing in the mirror.

“He’s just being an idiot. It’s a phase.”

“He’s being an idiot to a fifty-year-old employee who

works two jobs to support his mother,” Rachel shot back.

“I’ll handle it,” Henry deflected.

“When?”

Henry did not answer. He just walked away.

That was Henry’s second mistake.

Marcus did not need protecting because he was

helpless.

He needed a workplace where another person’s

success did not excuse blatant disrespect.

There was a massive difference.

Three weeks after Derek won the title, Titan Fight Club

held a Friday night 'open mat'.

It was a busy night. About thirty people showed up.

There were active competitors. Complete beginners.

Several teenagers from the after-school youth

program.

A few parents had even stayed to watch from the

bleachers.

Derek, basking in his glory, brought the championship

belt with him.

He filed it away in his mind. He would talk to Derek.

Again, later. Always later.

Marcus arrived at eight o'clock sharp.

He had already worked a grueling nine-hour shift

fixing plumbing and replacing fluorescent bulbs at the

community college.

His bad right knee throbbed with every step.

His younger sister had called him that afternoon. The

news wasn't good.

Their mother’s assisted-living facility had raised its

monthly rate again. The costs were becoming unbearable.

Marcus had taken this late-night cleaning job

specifically to help cover that gap. He couldn't afford to lose

it.

He was exhausted. Bone-tired.

He just wanted to wipe down the mats, take out the

trash, finish by ten-thirty, and go home to his small

apartment.

But Derek Vaughn wanted an audience.

The real problem started near the cage door.

A nervous beginner named Lucas was practicing

double-leg takedown entries with another white belt.

Lucas was clumsy. His timing was off. His posture was

too high.

Derek stood nearby, leaning against the cage, watching

for thirty seconds.

Then he barked a laugh.

“You’re begging to get flattened, kid.”

Lucas stopped mid-motion, looking embarrassed.

“What am I doing wrong?”

“Everything,” Derek sneered.

Derek stepped onto the mat, waving the other partner

away.

He began to correct Lucas. But he didn't do it to teach;

he did it to show off.

He was aggressive, snapping commands and physically

jerking Lucas into position.

Lucas tried the move again.

Still wrong.

Derek sighed loudly, running a hand over his face.

“My grandmother moves faster than that, and she's

been dead for ten years.”

A few of Derek's friends chuckled.

Lucas forced a painful, humiliating smile.

Just a few feet away, Marcus was quietly wiping down

the vinyl padding on the cage door.

Derek continued his tyrannical instruction.

“Commit to the drop!”

Lucas tried again, shooting for the legs.

Derek stuffed the attempt roughly, pushing the

beginner's head down.

“No.”

Lucas reset, breathing heavily. He tried again.

“No.”

Again.

“No. Are you even listening to me?”

Lucas’s face reddened. He was panicking,

overwhelmed by the pressure.

Marcus, still wiping the cage, muttered quietly to

himself.

“He’s tired.”

The gym was relatively quiet. The words carried.

Derek snapped his head around.

“What?”

Marcus stopped wiping. He realized he had spoken

aloud. A habit born from years of solitude.

“Nothing,” Marcus said, turning back to the cage.

“No.” Derek smiled, a predatory gleam in his eye. “I

heard you say something, janitor.”

Marcus kept his back turned, his rag moving in slow

circles.

“I said he’s tired.”

Derek looked back at the panting Lucas.

“He’s tired?”
