"Brother Who Found Water!"

Ethan looked back.

He tipped his hat.

Then he rode into the desert.

He carried no gold.

No silver.

No bride.

Only a blanket, a mesquite staff, a turquoise stone, and a memory he would never forget.

But the story did not end there.

Because Ethan soon discovered that finding the spring had created enemies as well as friends.

Three days after leaving the Apache village, Ethan found the missing cattle.

They were grazing in a dry valley beneath a line of cliffs.

Most were alive.

A few had been lost.

Ethan counted them carefully.

The herd belonged to a rancher several days north.

Ethan planned to drive the cattle back.

But before he could begin, he noticed something troubling.

Fresh horse tracks.

Not his.

Not Apache.

Six riders had passed through recently.

Ethan studied the tracks.

Then he saw something else.

A broken wagon wheel.

Near it lay an empty water barrel.

Someone had been traveling through the region and had run into trouble.

Ethan followed the tracks.

By sunset, he found the riders.

They were camped in a dry wash.

Six men.

Armed.

Ethan recognized one of them.

Silas Crowe.

A former scout who had once served in the cavalry.

Crowe was known for smuggling weapons and stealing livestock.

He recognized Ethan too.

"Cole."

Ethan stopped.

"Silas."

Crowe smiled.

"I heard you were searching for cattle."

"I found them."

Crowe looked toward the herd.

"That's unfortunate."

Ethan kept his hand away from his pistol.

Crowe walked closer.

"We could save you the trouble."

"No."

Crowe laughed.

"You always were stubborn."

Then he noticed the blanket around Ethan's shoulders.

His expression changed.

"Where did you get that?"

Ethan said nothing.

Crowe looked at the staff.

Then the turquoise stone.

"You've been with the Apache."

Ethan remained silent.

Crowe smiled slowly.

"Where's the water?"

Ethan understood.

Crowe had been searching for the same thing.

"If you're thirsty," Ethan said, "there's water north."

Crowe laughed.

"Don't lie to me."

He drew his pistol.

Ethan's hand moved toward his own.

Then the wind changed.

A distant whistle came from the cliffs.

Crowe looked up.

Another whistle answered.

Then another.

His men became nervous.

Ethan knew that sound.

Apache scouts.

Crowe looked back at Ethan.

"You led them here."

"No."

Ethan smiled faintly.

"They were already here."

The cliffs seemed to come alive.

Warriors appeared along the ridge.

Dozens.

Bows were drawn.

Crowe's men raised their weapons.

Ethan stepped between them.

"Put the guns down."

Crowe glared.

"You think they won't kill us?"

"They don't want your lives."

Crowe laughed.

"How do you know?"

"Because if they did, you'd already be dead."

Silence.

The Apache warriors remained still.

Chief Nantan was not among them.

But one scout recognized Ethan and shouted something.

The interpreter was not there.

Still, Ethan understood the message.

The blanket mattered.

The staff mattered.

The promise mattered.

The Apache had recognized their brother.

Crowe lowered his pistol.

Slowly, the other men followed.

The Apache warriors approached.

They did not attack.

They simply took the weapons.

Crowe stared at Ethan.

"You've made friends."

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

He looked toward the cliffs.

"I've earned trust."

The distinction stayed with Crowe.

The men were escorted away from the area.

Ethan gathered his cattle.

Before leaving, one of the Apache scouts approached him.

He touched the blanket.

Then pointed toward the village.

Ethan understood.

They wanted him to return.

Ethan smiled.

"I will."

The scout nodded.

Then disappeared into the rocks.

Ethan spent the next several weeks returning the cattle and settling his affairs.

But he could not forget the village.

Eventually, he rode back.

When he arrived, the children recognized him first.

They ran toward him.

"The Brother Who Found Water!"

Ethan laughed.
