Adrian was no longer smiling.
He looked at Elena differently now.
Not as a joke.
As a problem.
Master Blackwood checked the clock.
"Final round."
Adrian stepped onto the mat.
Elena looked at him.
He smiled.
"I've been waiting."
"I know."
The bell rang.
Adrian moved like water.
Left.
Right.
Forward.
Back.
He tried to confuse her.
For the first time, Elena had to work.
Adrian attempted a sweep.
She avoided it.
He changed direction.
She followed.
Then he suddenly dropped his weight and caught her ankle.
Elena stumbled.
The students cheered.
Adrian pulled.
Elena fell to one knee.
He moved to control her.
But Elena had expected it.
She rotated her leg, trapped his arm, and shifted her weight.
Adrian froze.
He understood immediately.
If this had been a real fight, he would already have been in trouble.
Elena released him.
She stood.
Adrian remained kneeling.
The bell rang.
Silence followed.
Elena looked at the three men.
"Now," she said quietly, "we can talk."
Master Blackwood looked toward Lily.
Then back at Elena.
He understood.
This had never been about proving she was better than them.
It had been about proving something else.
That confidence without discipline could become cruelty.
And Lily had been paying the price.
Elena stepped off the mat.
Marcus lowered his eyes.
Cole rubbed his shoulder.
Adrian stared at the floor.
Finally, Master Blackwood spoke.
"Lily."
She looked up.
"I'm sorry."
Lily blinked.
Marcus swallowed.
"So am I."
Cole nodded.
Adrian was silent for several seconds.
Then he said:
"I didn't realize how hard I was pushing."
Elena looked at him.
"That's the problem."
Master Blackwood nodded.
"Tomorrow, we're changing the training system."
Marcus frowned.
"Because of one session?"
"No."
Blackwood looked toward Elena.
"Because of what this session revealed."
Elena picked up her sweatshirt.
She thought the matter was finished.
She was wrong.
Because outside the dojo, a black SUV had been waiting across the street.
Inside sat a man who had watched every second.
And he had not come to apologize.
He had come looking for Elena.
Because he knew something about her past that Lily did not.
Something Elena had spent fifteen years trying to forget.
And now that past had finally found her.
The man in the SUV was named Victor Kane.
He had watched Elena leave Blackwood Dojo.
He had watched Lily follow her.
He had watched Master Blackwood lock the doors.
Then he made a phone call.
"She's here."
A pause.
"Yes. I'm sure."
Another pause.
"No. She hasn't recognized me."
Victor ended the call.
Inside the Carter home, Elena prepared dinner as though nothing unusual had happened.
Lily sat at the kitchen table.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Finally Lily said:
"Mom?"
"Yes?"
"How did you do that?"
Elena continued cutting vegetables.
"Do what?"
"Fight."
"I told you. I trained a long time ago."
"Where?"
Elena stopped.
That was the question she had hoped Lily would never ask.
"Different places."
"That's not an answer."
Elena smiled faintly.
"You sound like me."
"I learned from you."
Elena looked at her daughter.
Sixteen.
Strong-willed.
Curious.
And now old enough to start discovering the parts of her mother's life that had been deliberately hidden.
"I trained when I was young."
