“What?”
“You didn't have to do that.”
“I know.”
“You know they're going to talk about you now.”
“They were already talking.”
Noah shook his head.
Marcus returned.
“Sorry about that.”
Maya nodded.
“It's fine.”
“No, it isn't.”
Marcus looked toward the three fighters.
“They're good athletes.”
“I can see that.”
“But they're young.”
“So?”
“They confuse confidence with invincibility.”
Maya's expression softened.
“That sounds familiar.”
Marcus studied her.
“You really do train.”
Maya smiled.
“I used to.”
Before Marcus could ask another question, Daniel called from the mat.
“Coach!”
Marcus turned.
Daniel was smiling.
“Why don't we settle this?”
Marcus frowned.
“Settle what?”
Daniel looked at Maya.
“She keeps watching us like she knows something.”
Maya remained silent.
Leo laughed.
“Maybe she thinks we're doing it wrong.”
Aaron cracked his knuckles.
“Let her pick somebody.”
Noah immediately stepped forward.
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
His voice was louder than expected.
“No.”
Daniel smiled.
“Relax, kid.”
“No.”
Maya placed a hand on Noah's shoulder.
“It's okay.”
“No, Mom.”
She looked at him.
“Trust me.”
Noah's expression showed exactly how little he wanted to.
Daniel stepped forward.
“One round.”
Marcus shook his head.
“This isn't happening.”
Daniel continued.
“Technical sparring.”
Leo joined him.
“Three minutes.”
Aaron smiled.
“Unless she wants to choose.”
Maya looked at the three fighters.
Then at Marcus.
Then at Noah.
She understood what was happening.
They weren't challenging her because they thought she was dangerous.
They were challenging her because they thought she wasn't.
And sometimes the most important lesson was not about winning.
It was about showing people what they had refused to see.
Maya slowly removed her jacket.
The room became quiet.
Noah stared at her.
“Mom…”
She folded the jacket and placed it on a bench.
Then she stepped onto the mat.
Daniel grinned.
“Finally.”
Maya looked at him.
“Actually…”
She pointed toward the three men.
“Why choose one?”
Daniel's smile faded.
Maya continued.
“If we're doing this, let's make it useful.”
Leo blinked.
Aaron stopped smiling.
Marcus stared at her.
Maya took a slow breath.
“All three of you.”
The room exploded into whispers.
And for the first time that evening, Marcus understood that the woman standing before him wasn't there merely to complain about how his academy treated her son.
She had come to find out whether the academy deserved him.
And she intended to find out herself.
Marcus refused at first.
“No.”
Maya stood in the center of the mat.
Daniel, Leo, and Aaron waited several feet away.
“No,” Marcus repeated.
“This isn't a circus.”
Maya nodded.
“I agree.”
“Then step off the mat.”
Maya looked at Noah.
Her son was watching nervously.
She turned back.
“I don't want a fight.”
Daniel laughed.
“You just challenged three people.”
“I challenged a training exercise.”
Aaron crossed his arms.
“There's a difference?”
“A very large one.”
Marcus studied her.
“What exactly are you proposing?”
“Three rounds.”
“How long?”
“Two minutes each.”
“One at a time.”
“Correct.”
“Contact level?”
“Technical.”
“No striking?”
“No striking.”
“No dangerous throws?”
“Agreed.”
Marcus looked at the three men.
“And if I stop it?”
“Then it stops.”
Daniel sighed.
“This is ridiculous.”
Marcus stared at him.
“You're welcome to leave.”
Daniel immediately became quiet.
Marcus looked at Maya.
“You understand that these men are experienced.”
“Yes.”
“They're significantly younger than you.”
“Yes.”
“Stronger.”
“Yes.”
“Faster.”
Maya smiled.
“Probably.”
“Then why?”
She glanced at Noah.
“Because my son stopped enjoying something he once loved.”
Silence filled the room.
Maya continued.
“I don't need you to prove that your fighters are talented. I can see that.”
She looked at Daniel.
“I need to know whether they understand control.”
Then she looked at Aaron.
“Whether they understand restraint.”
Finally, she looked at Leo.
“And whether they understand what training is actually for.”
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Fine.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“I'll go first.”
Marcus raised a hand.
“Light contact.”
Daniel nodded.
Maya loosened her shoulders.
The room gathered around them.
Noah stood near the wall.
