heavily on the small space.

"Scan it again, please," Eleanor requested. Her

voice was neither raised nor aggressive; it carried

the steady, resonant calm of someone who is

entirely certain of her ground. "Sometimes the

glare from the overhead lights interferes with the

optical reader."

Marcus scoffed, clearly offended that a

passenger was attempting to instruct him on his

equipment. "Ma'am, I have been scanning passes

all day. The machine works perfectly fine. Your

credentials do not match our system's manifest for

this flight. You are holding up the line."

"The information is correct," Eleanor persisted

gently. "If you look at the PNR code in the top

right corner, you can pull up my profile in the

Genesis database. It will show my clearance for

this flight."

"I'm not pulling up anything in Genesis right

now," Marcus snapped, his professionalism

completely eroding under the perceived pressure

of the boarding delay. "The pass has already been

checked. It's invalid. I need you to step away from

the gate immediately, or I will have to call airport

security to escort you out of the boarding area."

A hush fell over the immediate vicinity.

Security. The word was a heavy threat in a

modern airport, a quick way to escalate a simple

misunderstanding into a traumatic ordeal.

Passengers whispered to one another. A man

behind Eleanor sighed loudly and muttered,

"Come on, lady, just go to the desk."

Despite the immensely uncomfortable and

public nature of the situation, Eleanor remained

remarkably composed. She didn't flush with

anger. She didn't raise her voice to match

Marcus's escalating tone. She simply looked at

him, her gray eyes cool and analytical.

"I will step aside to allow the others to board,"

Eleanor said softly, ensuring only Marcus could

hear her next words. "But I must warn you, there

is an important mistake being made here. The

system is only as good as the operator willing to

look at it."

Marcus rolled his eyes, taking the next

passenger's boarding pass without responding to

her. He had already dismissed her as just another

difficult, entitled traveler. Eleanor turned and

walked a few paces away from the podium,

standing near the large plate-glass window, her

silhouette framed by the massive aircraft outside.

She watched as Marcus continued to board the

passengers, oblivious to the storm he had just

invited into his career.

The boarding area slowly emptied as the final

passengers funneled down the jet bridge.

Eleanor stood by the window, watching the

choreography of the ground crew below. The

baggage handlers were tossing the last of the

heavy canvas bags onto the conveyor belt. The

fuel trucks were detaching their massive hoses.

The reality of the flight's impending departure
