Jack stepped forward.

Daniel shouted:

“Don't.”

Anna's hand tightened around Lily's.

Jack froze.

Rachel stared.

Robert backed away.

Daniel's face had gone white.

“Get away from her,” he said.

Anna looked at her son.

“Daniel.”

“Let Lily go.”

Anna looked down.

The child stared up at her.

“Grandma?”

Anna's expression softened.

“Oh, sweetheart.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“You lied to me.”

Anna shook her head.

“I protected you.”

“You stole me.”

Anna flinched.

Jack stared.

“What is happening?”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“I found out this morning.”

“Found out what?”

He looked at Anna.

Then at Jack.

“My mother built the network.”

Silence.

Jack felt his stomach twist.

Anna looked at him.

“I can explain.”

“You've had twenty-six years.”

“I know.”

“You weren't running from them.”

“No.”

“You were one of them.”

Anna closed her eyes.

“At first.”

Jack stared.

“At first?”

She nodded.

“My father ran the operation. I inherited it.”

“Charles Reed?”

“My stepfather.”

“And he worked for you?”

“Yes.”

Jack laughed once.

It was a terrible sound.

“You let me believe you were afraid of him.”

“I was.”

“Were you ever afraid of anything?”

Anna looked at him.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Losing you.”

Jack stared at the woman before him.

“Then why did you leave?”

“Because loving you didn't make the danger disappear.”

Daniel interrupted.

“She was protecting me too.”

Jack looked at him.

“Then why did you hide my son from me?”

Anna's eyes filled with tears.

Daniel froze.

Jack's voice broke.

“My son?”

Anna couldn't answer.

Daniel whispered:

“I think it's true.”

Jack turned toward him.

The age.

The documents.

The false names.

The impossible timeline.

Everything began to shift.

The farmhouse seemed too small for the truth inside it.

Everyone had discovered something.

Nobody knew what to say.

Anna finally released Lily.

The child ran to Daniel.

He dropped his cane and caught her.

She wrapped both arms around him.

“Dad!”

Daniel held her tightly.

“I’m here.”

“Why did you leave?”

“I was trying to make sure you were safe.”

Lily cried.

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

Jack watched them.

For years he had imagined what it might feel like to meet a child he had never known.

He had never imagined that child would already be a grown man.

Daniel turned toward him.

“Dad.”

The word hit Jack harder than everything else.

He sat down.

Anna remained standing.

“You knew,” Jack said.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Since before Daniel was born.”

“Then why?”

“Because the people who wanted control of the network wanted Daniel as leverage.”

Jack shook his head.

“You gave him another name.”

“Yes.”

“You changed his age.”

“Yes.”

“You created another mother.”

“Yes.”

“Teresa Vaughn.”

Anna nodded.

“She helped me.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You told me she was my birth mother.”

“I needed you to believe that.”

“You erased my real history.”

“I gave you a history that kept you alive.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“That isn't the same thing.”

“No.”

Jack looked at the motorcycle.

“So this machine carried all of it.”

Anna nodded.

“I needed somewhere nobody would look.”

“Why not a safe?”

“Because thieves were always searched. A motorcycle was searched for parts.”

Jack almost smiled.

“That sounds like something you would think of.”

Anna's eyes softened.

“You always liked the way I thought.”

“I liked the girl who thought she could become someone better.”

Anna looked down.

“She tried.”

Jack looked away.

“Did she?”

Anna didn't answer.

Robert stepped forward.

“There is another part.”

Everyone looked at him.

Robert reached into his coat.

He handed Jack an envelope.

Jack opened it.

Inside was a DNA report.

Two names.

Daniel Carter.

Jack Mercer.

The probability of biological relationship was overwhelmingly high.

Jack stared.

Daniel whispered:

“I didn't believe it.”

Jack looked at Anna.

She nodded.

“I was pregnant when I left.”

“You never told me.”

“I knew you would come after me.”

“Of course I would.”

“And that was exactly what I couldn't allow.”

Jack's eyes filled.

“You took my son.”

Anna began crying.

“I stole the motorcycle too.”

“That doesn't make it better.”

“I know.”

“You could have told me.”

“I was afraid.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it's true.”

Jack stood.

“Fear doesn't excuse everything.”

Anna looked at him.

“No.”

Daniel stepped between them.

“She made terrible choices.”

Anna stared at her son.

“That's true.”

“But she kept me alive.”

“Yes.”

“And she brought you back to us.”

Jack looked at him.

“You planned the motorcycle?”

Daniel shook his head.

“My mother did.”

Anna whispered:

“I knew the network was collapsing. I knew someone would eventually uncover the old records. I needed the evidence to reach someone I believed would not destroy it.”

Jack looked at himself.

“You picked me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Anna took a breath.

“Because you were the only honest man I ever knew.”

Jack laughed sadly.

“And you lied to me more than anyone.”

“I know.”

The words hurt.

But they also ended something.

The fantasy of the woman Anna had been.

She had been real.

The love had been real.

The betrayal had been real.

Both things could exist together.

Rachel stepped forward.

“What happens now?”

Robert answered.
