She had been wrong.

But being wrong wasn't the most important part.

She had begun acting as though she were right.

And Daniel had learned something about people who confuse those two things.

They often become dangerous when corrected.

 The Warning

The final warning arrived on a Monday morning.

Daniel was in his office when his assistant placed the envelope on his desk.

“This one looks official.”

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a single page.

FINAL NOTICE OF UNAUTHORIZED POSSESSION AND COMMERCIAL ACTIVITY

He read it twice.

Then he called his attorney.

“Thomas.”

“Yes?”

“Have you ever seen this language?”

“No.”

“Read the second paragraph.”

Thomas listened.

Then laughed.

“That's absurd.”

“What part?”

“Everything.”

Daniel leaned back.

The notice claimed that Daniel had “entered a restricted neighborhood-controlled commercial parcel without permission.”

His attorney continued.

“Does she know you own the property?”

“She knows.”

“Then this is no longer a misunderstanding.”

“I know.”

“Daniel, you need to stop dealing with her informally.”

“I agree.”

“I'm sending you a formal demand letter.”

“Do it.”

Thomas hesitated.

“And Daniel?”

“Yes?”

“Don't meet her alone.”

Daniel looked toward the window.

Across the street, he could see the gas station.

The building stood empty behind temporary fencing.

“No problem.”

But Daniel had one more reason for going there that afternoon.

He had received approval from the county to begin renovations.

He wanted to walk through the building one last time before construction.

At four fifteen, he arrived.

He unlocked the side entrance.

The inside smelled like dust, old cardboard, and stale gasoline.

He walked slowly through the store.

The shelves were empty.

The refrigerators were unplugged.

The floor tiles were cracked.

But beneath the decay, Daniel could still see what it could become.

Fresh food.

Coffee.

Local products.

A small seating area.

Perhaps a bakery counter.

He was smiling when he heard a voice behind him.

“You were told not to enter.”

Daniel turned.

Margaret stood outside.

Two people were with her.

A tall man in a navy polo shirt.

And a younger woman holding a clipboard.

Daniel recognized them.

HOA board members.

Margaret folded her arms.

“You are trespassing.”

“I own the property.”

“You don't have permission from the association.”

“I don't need it.”
