THE MAN IN THE LIBRARY
Chapter 1
The Vanguard Estate had always been a monument to
untouchable wealth. Tonight, it was a glittering jewel suspended in
the suffocating heat of the city’s summer. The annual charity gala
had drawn the apex predators of society—business moguls with
empires built on broken laws, celebrities whose smiles masked
vicious habits, politicians whose loyalties were sold to the highest
bidder, and old-money families who watched the world burn from
behind crystal glasses. Above them all, a massive chandelier,
constructed of ten thousand individual tear-drop crystals,
fractured the ambient light into sharp, blinding prisms across the
polished marble floors.
Champagne poured freely from bottles that cost more than the
average citizen made in a decade. An orchestra, draped in black
velvet and stationed near the sweeping grand staircase, played a
soft, haunting rendition of a classical waltz. Waiters moved like
ghosts through the crowd, offering hors d'oeuvres on silver
platters, their eyes permanently fixed on the floor. It was a
perfectly choreographed dance of power, prestige, and utter moral
bankruptcy.
I stood near the edge of the ballroom, a solitary figure draped
in an emerald silk dress that spoke of wealth, but not of notoriety.
To them, I was a ghost. A plus-one. A nameless face allowed into
their sanctuary, expected to smile, nod, and fade into the
background. That was exactly what I wanted them to think.
Then came Julian Sterling.
Julian was the heir to the Sterling conglomerate, a man whose
entire existence was defined by a profound, sickening entitlement.
He moved through the crowd with the lazy, heavy grace of a
predator that had never known a cage. He was flanked by his usual
entourage of sycophants—men with too much cologne and too
little spine, and women whose laughter rang hollow and sharp.
He had targeted me the moment I entered. Perhaps it was
because I hadn't looked at him with the requisite awe. Perhaps it
was because I had declined his invasive, predatory attempt at
conversation by the bar earlier in the evening. For a man like
Julian, a simple 'no' was not a boundary; it was a personal insult
that required violent correction.
The incident happened fast, a calculated collision disguised as
a drunken accident. He cornered me near the grand columns.
When I tried to step past him, his hand shot out, gripping my arm
with bruising force. I didn't flinch. I didn't beg. I merely looked at
his hand, and then at his face, my expression entirely blank.
The indifference infuriated him.
With a sudden, vicious shove, he threw his weight against me.
The impact was deafening in my own ears as my back and the side
of my head slammed against the immovable, cold surface of the
marble wall. A sharp, stinging pain erupted across my cheekbone,
and I tasted the distinct, metallic copper of blood blooming on my
lower lip.
For a fraction of a second, the world tilted. The orchestral
music seemed to slow down, the notes stretching and warping. But
my heart rate did not spike. My breathing did not hitch. I simply
braced myself against the cold stone, the raw sting of the impact
serving only as a quiet confirmation that the moment we had
waited for had finally arrived.
I slowly wiped the corner of my mouth with the back of my
hand. The skin was broken, leaving a thin, brilliant red streak
across my pale skin. I didn't look down at it. I never took my eyes
