THE MAN WHO ASKED FOR SIXTY DAYS
Chapter 2
Sixty days for children not to wake up under a bridge.
Sixty days for elderly people not to lose the only home they recognized.
Joseph stepped onto the bus.
He looked at the skyline through the window.
At the center stood Hail Capital Tower.
Forty-two stories of glass and steel.
The headquarters of Marcus Hail.
A billionaire who had purchased entire blocks of the city.
Joseph watched the tower grow larger.
Then quietly said:
"Let's see if a man with everything can spare sixty days for people who have almost nothing."
The lobby of Hail Capital Tower looked like a different world.
Polished stone.
Huge glass walls.
Security guards in dark suits.
A waterfall flowed beside the reception desk.
Joseph stepped through the doors.
Several people looked at him.
Some stared at his coat.
One security guard immediately moved closer.
"Can I help you?"
"Yes."
"Do you have an appointment?"
"No."
"Who are you here to see?"
"Marcus Hail."
The guard almost smiled.
"Mr. Hail?"
"Yes."
"Do you have an appointment with him?"
"No."
"Then I'm afraid you can't go upstairs."
Joseph nodded.
"I understand."
The receptionist looked at him.
"Is there someone else you need to see?"
"No."
"Mr. Hail doesn't meet with walk-ins."
Joseph smiled.
"I've heard that before."
The receptionist pointed toward the exit.
"I'm sorry."
Joseph didn't move.
"Could you call his office?"
"I don't think they'll take the call."
"Please."
The receptionist sighed.
She picked up the phone.
"Hail Capital reception."
She paused.
"There's an elderly gentleman here asking for Mr. Hail."
Another pause.
"What name?"
She looked at Joseph.
"Joseph Reed."
The person on the other end said something.
The receptionist's expression changed.
"Yes."
She listened.
Then slowly hung up.
Joseph waited.
"Well?"
"They'll see you."
The security guard looked surprised.
"Who?"
"Mr. Hail's office."
Joseph nodded.
"Thank you."
An elevator carried him to the thirty-fourth floor.
When the doors opened, everything became quieter.
The receptionist upstairs looked at him.
"Mr. Reed?"
"Yes."
"Please wait."
Joseph sat.
Through a glass wall, he could see a conference room.
Inside sat six executives.
At the center was Marcus Hail.
Forty-six years old.
Perfect suit.
Silver watch.
Dark hair.
Confident posture.
Marcus glanced toward the lobby.
He saw Joseph.
Then laughed.
One of the executives leaned closer.
"Who is that?"
"I have no idea."
Marcus smiled.
"Apparently, he's here to teach us how to run a company."
A few people laughed.
The receptionist eventually opened the door.
"Mr. Reed, they're ready for you."
Joseph entered.
Marcus didn't stand.
"Mr. Reed."
"Mr. Hail."
Marcus gestured toward a chair.
"Please sit."
Joseph sat.
Marcus looked at him.
"So."
He paused.
