Henry stepped inside.

Behind him stood James.

Naomi stared at both men.

Then James said:

“It's time you knew what your mother really left you.”

He held up a small black box.

And on its lid was engraved a single word:

NORTHSTAR.

THE BOX

Naomi stared at the black box.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The basement was cold.

Dust floated through the beam of a single emergency light. Somewhere above them, wind pushed against the broken windows of the mansion, making the building groan like something alive.

James stood beside Henry.

Samuel sat against the wall, one hand pressed against the wound in his shoulder.

Naomi looked from one man to the other.

“You both knew.”

James lowered his eyes.

Henry said nothing.

“You both knew my mother left something.”

James nodded.

“Yes.”

“What is it?”

“Something she wanted you to find only when you were ready.”

Naomi almost laughed.

“Ready?”

Her voice trembled.

“My entire life has been a series of people deciding what I was ready to know.”

She pointed at Samuel.

“You.”

Then Henry.

“You.”

Then James.

“You.”

She took a breath.

“No more.”

James slowly placed the box on the floor.

“You're right.”

He pushed it toward her.

“It belongs to you.”

Naomi knelt.

The box had no visible lock.

Only the word NORTHSTAR engraved into the lid.

She touched it.

Nothing happened.

Henry crouched beside her.

“Try your mother's necklace.”

Naomi removed the silver pendant.

The pendant fit perfectly into a narrow opening beneath the word.

She inserted it.

There was a click.

The lid opened.

Inside were three objects.

A USB drive.

A small brass key.

And a photograph.

Naomi picked up the photograph first.

It showed her mother.

But she wasn't alone.

She stood beside Richard.

Between them was a young man Naomi recognized.

Victor Hale.

And behind Victor was another man.

Edward Calloway.

But someone else stood in the corner.

A man Naomi had never seen.

Her eyes narrowed.

“Who is he?”

Samuel looked at the photograph.

His face changed.

“That's Arthur Vale.”

James shook his head.

“Impossible.”

“Who is Arthur Vale?” Naomi asked.

Samuel looked at her.

“The man who taught Victor everything he knows.”

Naomi looked back at the photograph.

“Where is he now?”

Samuel whispered:

“Dead.”

Henry studied the photograph.

“When?”

“1998.”

Naomi noticed something.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

October 12, 1998.

And underneath:

The night Northstar changed hands.

Naomi picked up the USB drive.

“What's on this?”

Her mother had labeled it in handwriting Naomi recognized immediately.

FOR MY DAUGHTER.

Naomi's throat tightened.

She inserted the drive into Henry's laptop.

A video opened.

Her mother's face filled the screen.

Claire Carter looked younger than Naomi remembered.

Healthy.

Calm.

Alive.

Naomi stopped breathing.

“Naomi,” Claire said on the recording, “if you're watching this, then you have discovered the truth about your father.”

Naomi closed her eyes.

“I wish I could have told you myself.”

Claire looked down.

“But I knew that telling you would make you a target.”

She took a breath.

“There are things about your birth that you don't know.”

Naomi opened her eyes.

“Richard was not simply trying to escape Northstar.”

Claire continued.

“He was trying to dismantle it from within.”

A second video appeared.

Richard.

Older.

Exhausted.

“Claire was right,” he said. “Northstar was no longer an organization. It had become a system.”

He leaned closer.

“And systems don't have leaders.”

Naomi frowned.

“They have beneficiaries.”

The screen went black.

A new document appeared.

A list.

Naomi began reading.

At the top were names of corporations.

Then banks.

Then politicians.

Then judges.

Then government contractors.

And finally—

HALE DEVELOPMENT GROUP.

Victor.

But beneath it was another company.

CALLoway Strategic Holdings.

Naomi looked at James.

“Edward was involved.”

James nodded.

“Deeply.”

“But Richard was a Calloway.”

“Yes.”

“So why would he expose his own family?”

“Because he discovered what they had done.”

Naomi looked back at the screen.

Then another name appeared.

CARTER STRATEGIC HOLDINGS.

She froze.

“My father's company.”

James closed his eyes.

Naomi turned toward him.

“You told me you never owned the money.”

“I didn't.”

“Then why is your name here?”

James didn't answer.

Naomi's voice rose.

“Why is my name here?”

James finally spoke.

“Because Northstar needed a clean name.”

“What does that mean?”

“They created the company using my identity.”

“But the $47 million—”

“Wasn't mine.”

“Whose was it?”

James looked at her.

“Yours.”

Naomi stared.

“What?”

“The money was placed in your name before you were born.”

Silence.

Henry looked at James.

“You never told us that.”

“I was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?” Naomi demanded.

James looked directly at her.

“That the money was meant to buy your life.”

THE PRICE OF PROTECTION

Naomi couldn't speak.

The $47 million.

The company.

Her father's signature.

Her birth.

All of it suddenly connected.

She looked at James.

“You're saying Northstar paid my family?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“They paid for your protection.”

“From whom?”

James looked toward Samuel.

Samuel answered.

“From the people who wanted you dead.”

Naomi shook her head.

“Why would anyone care about a baby?”

“Because your mother had evidence.”

“What evidence?”

“Proof that Northstar had manipulated a series of political campaigns, real-estate purchases and government contracts.”

Naomi frowned.

“That doesn't explain me.”

Samuel looked at her.

“Your mother had discovered something more valuable.”

“What?”

“The identity of the person who originally funded Northstar.”

Naomi waited.

“Who?”

Samuel said:

“Arthur Vale.”

Naomi looked at the photograph.

“But you said he was dead.”

“He is.”

“Then why does it matter?”

“Because Arthur left an inheritance.”

Naomi's heart sank.

“What inheritance?”

“Control.”

Samuel explained that Arthur had created Northstar in the early 1980s as a private intelligence network for wealthy investors.

At first, it had been legal.

They gathered information.

Predicted markets.

Tracked political developments.

Protected investments.

Then the network changed.

Money became power.

Power became control.

And control became blackmail.

Arthur began collecting secrets.

He discovered which politicians were corrupt.

Which judges had gambling debts.

Which developers were hiding illegal transactions.

Which executives had affairs.

Which families were vulnerable.
