"Derek Whitmore. Badge 4782."
"Jesus Christ," Winters breathed. "I am ten minutes away with Internal Affairs. Do not let him leave."
The Reckoning
When Chief Amanda Winters arrived alongside Special Agent Sarah Kim of the FBI Civil Rights Division and Internal Affairs Sergeant Vincent Thompson, the scene was entirely surrounded by official vehicles, news vans, and horrified neighbors.
Whitmore had completely broken down. He dropped to his knees on the wet lawn, his uniform soaking up mud. "Your Honor, please!" he wept, tears streaming down his face. "I'm sorry! I made a mistake! A terrible mistake!"
Simone stood wrapped in a warm towel provided by Eleanor, cold and shivering, but holding herself with absolute authority. "You didn't make a mistake, Officer Whitmore. You made a choice. You profiled me, humiliated me, and assaulted me because you saw a Black woman and assumed I didn't belong."
"I didn't mean—"
"Don't lie to me!" her voice cut like steel. "The truth is on camera from a dozen angles!"
Reporter Laura Carter from KOIN 6 News arrived on scene, her camera rolling as Simone stepped forward to deliver a public statement on live television, detailing the exact timeline of the assault. Behind them, FBI Agent Kim formally initiated a federal civil rights investigation.
Chief Winters walked up to Whitmore, her face set in stone. "Derek Whitmore, stand up."
He struggled to his feet, trembling.
"Hand over your badge, your service weapon, and all department property. Right now."
Mills stepped forward, handing over Whitmore's gear. Chief Winters dropped them into a clear evidence bag. "Fifteen years of service ended in one hour of hatred. You are terminated from the Portland Police Bureau, effective immediately."
Whitmore sobbed. "Chief, please! My wife, my kids—Emma is seven, Tyler is four! They need their father!"
"You should have thought about your children before you brutalized someone else's family," Simone said coldly.
Just then, a sedan pulled into the driveway. Jennifer Whitmore, Derek’s wife, jumped out in her nurse's scrubs. She took in the scene—the yellow crime scene tape, the FBI agents, the news cameras, and her husband standing stripped of his badge.
Mills quietly explained what happened. Jennifer’s face cycled from confusion to horror, and finally to pure rage.
"You assaulted a federal judge?!" she screamed at Whitmore. "In her own yard?!"
"Jenny, I didn't know—"
"Even if she wasn't a judge!" Jennifer cried, tears of shame streaming down her face. "How do I explain this to our children?!"
Jennifer walked straight up to Simone, bowing her head. "Your Honor, I am so deeply sorry. What he did was unforgivable."
