The Watch Commander
Cole didn't wait for Mallory's permission. Hands trembling, the rookie grabbed his shoulder microphone.
"Dispatch, Unit 4-Bravo. Requesting the watch commander to 4420 Oakleaf Drive immediately. Code four, but supervisor needed on scene."
"Copy 4-Bravo. Captain Keller is en route. ETA three minutes."
Natalie offered a brief, cold smile. She walked over to a patio chair, sat down, crossed her legs, and took another sip of her coffee.
"Three minutes," she noted softly. "Let's see how much constitutional law you can digest in three minutes."
For Mallory, those three minutes stretched like hours. He stood awkwardly on the walkway, sweat beading along his hairline, shifting his weight under Natalie’s unblinking gaze. Across the street, Carol Hastings watched in growing confusion, wondering why the suspect wasn't already in the back of the patrol car.
A black unmarked Ford Explorer turned onto Oakleaf Drive at high speed, screeching to a halt behind the cruisers. Captain David Keller stepped out, his silver hair and sharp uniform reflecting decades of service.
Keller took in the scene with a single glance: Mallory holding handcuffs, Cole looking visibly ill, and Natalie Whitaker sitting calmly on her porch in sweatpants.
All the color drained from Keller’s face.
"Mallory! Cole! Step away from the porch immediately!" Keller barked.
"Captain, we were responding to a 911 call about—"
"Shut your mouth and fall back!" Keller commanded.
The captain unbuttoned his uniform jacket, removed his hat, and walked up the driveway. He didn't swagger; he moved with complete deferential posture.
"Madam United States Attorney," Keller said loudly enough for the entire street to hear. "I offer my deepest, most sincere apologies for this unbelievable failure."
Behind Keller, Mallory’s jaw went slack. His hand fell limply from his belt. The woman he had threatened to arrest, the woman he had accused of holding a fake law degree, was the highest-ranking federal prosecutor in the region.
"Good morning, Captain Keller," Natalie said, her tone icy. "I wish I could say it was a pleasure. But your officers just threatened to arrest me on my own property."
"It will be handled with absolute severity, ma'am," Keller said, turning a furious glance toward Mallory. "Both officers are suspended effective immediately pending Internal Affairs review."
Mallory stammered, "Captain... the dispatch said armed burglary..."
"The dispatch call reported a person on a porch," Natalie interrupted, standing up from her chair. "Instead of assessing the situation, you relied on bias. You approached me with your hand on your weapon. You demanded papers like a border guard. If I did not know the law, I would be in handcuffs right now."
