managed a small, reassuring smile. "Okay. Yes. We'll wait
here. Do what you need to do."
She hung up the heavy receiver and turned fully to
Arthur. "He's clearing his schedule. He's driving down here
tonight. He said to tell you absolutely do not wash that
shirt. Put it in a plastic bag."
Arthur nodded slowly, understanding the implication.
"Evidence."
"Evidence," Martha confirmed, her voice hardening.
She walked across the linoleum floor and wrapped her
arms tightly around his waist, resting her forehead against
his chest. "I'm so incredibly angry, Artie. I don't think I've
ever been this angry in my entire life."
Arthur held her tight, resting his chin gently on top of
her silver hair. "I know, Marty. I know. I felt it too. But we
play the long game. We always have. We don't get down
into the mud to wrestle with pigs."
"No," she agreed, her voice muffled but carrying a
terrifying, absolute certainty. "We don't wrestle with them.
We send for the butcher."
Chapter 5: The Gathering Storm
The very next morning, the town of Oakhaven was
buzzing like a disturbed hornet's nest. In a small town
where gossip was the primary currency and
entertainment, the shocking incident at Rosie’s Diner was
equivalent to a sudden gold rush. The story spread rapidly
from porch to porch, embellished and exaggerated with
every frantic retelling. Some breathless accounts claimed
Clayton had punched Arthur in the jaw; others insisted
Arthur had thrown a plate of pie at the Sheriff first. But the
ugly core truth remained undeniable: the Sheriff had
publicly, intentionally humiliated the quietest, most
respected mechanic in town.
The town's reaction was deeply divided. A vocal,
obnoxious minority, mostly comprising Clayton’s cronies
and those who benefited from his corrupt favor, laughed it
off loudly, claiming Arthur had somehow provoked him or
that it was just a harmless practical joke gone slightly
wrong. But the vast, silent majority of Oakhaven was
deeply unsettled and angry. Arthur was a genuinely good
man. He had fixed cars for half the town on good-faith
credit, forgiven steep debts when families fell on hard
times, and never spoke an ill word about anyone. The
unprovoked attack felt like a severe violation of the town’s
unspoken moral code.
Clayton, meanwhile, was utterly oblivious to the
shifting tide, actively reveling in his perceived victory. He
swaggered through the town square that morning, his
chest puffed out like a proud rooster, deeply enjoying the
fearful, darting glances cast his way by the townsfolk. He
felt entirely invincible. He had firmly put the old, stubborn
man in his place and proven to everyone that absolutely no
one was above his authority.
He was standing outside the local barber shop, loudly
regaling the uncomfortable owner with a highly
fictionalized, heroic version of events, when a sleek,
heavily tinted black sedan with official state government
plates pulled smoothly into the parking spot right in front
of him.
Clayton frowned, his sentence dying on his lips. State
cars rarely, if ever, visited Oakhaven unless there was a
significant problem. He watched warily as the driver's side
door opened and a tall, imposing man in a sharp,
by genuine, cold alarm. "You're joking. You can't be serious.
You're trying to ruin my career over a stupid prank?"
"I assure you, Sheriff Clayton, I have never been more
serious in my entire life," David said, finally taking off his
