At twenty-seven years old, Captain Kate Evans was an anomaly in the 104th Airborne Division. Brilliant, decisive, and exceptionally young for her rank, she had earned her position through sheer tactical ingenuity and an unyielding work ethic. However, a silver oak leaf on a collar doesn’t automatically earn respect, especially not in a unit entrenched in old ways.

For the most part, her subordinates followed her orders with the professionalism expected of them. But a toxic undercurrent festered within a specific trio of veterans: Sergeant Miller, Corporal Vance, and Specialist Hayes. Miller, ten years Kate's senior, had been passed over for the command position she now held. In his eyes, and the eyes of his two loyal shadows, a twenty-seven-year-old woman had no business leading them into active combat zones.

After every debrief, every minor reprimand, or every grueling training exercise, the three men would silently exchange venomous glances. Their resentment mutated into a quiet, simmering anger. Kate was not blind to their cold attitudes, the slight hesitation before they saluted, or the muttered comments that stopped the moment she entered a room. Yet, she chose the high road. She believed that the crucible of discipline and time would eventually melt away their personal grievances. She remained steadfast, demanding nothing short of excellence and strict obedience from every soldier, regardless of their personal feelings toward her.

The tension finally snapped a few weeks later when the unit was deployed on a high-stakes, rapid-insertion combat mission. The air inside the UH-60 Black Hawk was thick with the smell of aviation fuel and nervous adrenaline.

The flight was proceeding smoothly through the mountainous terrain. As they neared the extraction point, Captain Kate unbuckled her harness and moved toward the open side door. The deafening roar of the rotors and the violent rush of cold air consumed the cabin. She leaned out slightly, gripping the metal frame, communicating via headset with the pilot to verify the landing zone coordinates.

She was completely focused on the mission. She never saw them move.
