Shaw looked at Rachel, then at me, then at Sam, then back at the contract in his hands. He closed the folder and handed it back to Rachel, carefully, as if it were something he did not want to be accused of keeping.

"I am not hooking this car," he said. "I do not tow a vehicle when the owner is standing right here telling me no and showing me a contract that says I cannot. I do not want that kind of trouble, and I do not want to be the man in the middle of this."

He walked back to his truck, winched the cable back in, raised the bed, and climbed into the cab. Before he drove away, he rolled down his window and looked at Rachel.

"Tell your lawyer I backed off when I saw the paperwork," he said. "And tell Carol Beckett that if she calls me again, she can find someone else. I am not coming back for this car."

The truck pulled out slowly, its diesel fading down the street, and the night went quiet again, except for the crickets and the sound of my own breathing, which I realised I had been holding.

Rachel stood in the driveway for a moment, holding the folder, looking at the Porsche, which sat exactly where it had sat all evening, untouched, unhooked, undamaged. No cable had touched it. No wheel had been lifted. No door had been opened. She put her hand on the roof again, just briefly, and then she turned to Sam and to George and to Helen, who was now standing in her doorway in her robe.

"Thank you," Rachel said. "All of you. You did not have to come out at midnight, and you did."

Sam lowered his phone and nodded. "We look out for each other on this street, Rachel. That has always been the rule, even if someone tried to rewrite it."

Deputy Cole arrived a few minutes later, not with sirens, just with her cruiser pulling up quietly and her flashlight in her hand. She took statements from Rachel and from me and from Sam, and she photographed the tyre marks where Shaw's truck had backed in and then pulled out, and she noted the time, and she asked Rachel to keep the folder safe. She did not make a big show of it. She just did her job, thoroughly, the way she had done it from the first morning.

"He will be a witness now, whether he wants to be or not," Deputy Cole said, meaning Shaw. "A man who walks away when he sees the contract is a man who can tell a court what he was told and what he found when he got here."

After Deputy Cole left, Rachel and I went back inside, and we sat at the kitchen table with tea that neither of us really wanted but both of us needed to hold in our hands. Rachel called Olivia, even though it was late, and Olivia answered on the second ring, because lawyers who are in the middle of a case like this do not sleep quite normally either. Rachel told her what had happened, in order, without exaggerating, and Olivia said she would add Shaw to the witness list and would send a letter to Carol's lawyer in the morning, putting the night tow attempt on the record.

I slept badly after that, in the way you sleep after an alarm that turned out not to be a fire but could have been. Every small sound from the street woke me for a while, and then, somewhere near dawn, I finally slept properly, and when I woke, the light was coming through the blinds in soft bars, and Rachel was already in the kitchen, making breakfast, acting as if the night had been ordinary, which was her way of telling me we were going to be all right.

The second fine notice arrived three days later, and it was worse than the first, because it pretended the night tow had never happened and the audit had never started.

It came by certified mail this time, so I had to sign for it at the door, which felt deliberate, as if Carol wanted a record that I had received it. The letter said the daily fine of five hundred dollars had continued to accrue, that the total now owed was in the thousands, and that failure to pay would result in a lien against my house. It said the Porsche was still in violation of the luxury vehicle display rule, the same rule Alice had already shown us did not exist in the original covenants, the same rule Carol had backdated to the twelfth of March. It did not mention Shaw. It did not mention the contract Rachel had shown him. It did not mention that the car had not been moved, had not been hooked, had not been damaged, because there was nothing to report on that front except that Carol's plan had failed.
