Victor laughed.

Then he released the fighter.

Miller watched Noah carefully.

Later, he approached.

"You handled that well."

Noah smiled.

"Old me would've done something stupid."

"New you?"

"New me knows when not to."

Miller nodded.

"Your father would be proud."

Noah looked down.

"I think so."

Before the national tournament, Coach Miller called Noah into his office.

He closed the door.

"There's something you need to know."

Noah sat.

"What?"

Miller placed a file on the desk.

Inside was a letter.

It was from the tournament committee.

They wanted Noah to become the youngest head coach in the regional program.

Noah stared.

"You recommended me?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you understand what the sport is supposed to teach."

Noah looked at the letter.

"I don't know if I'm ready."

Miller smiled.

"Good."

"Good?"

"People who think they're ready for everything usually aren't."

Noah laughed.

Miller leaned back.

"Your father taught me that."

Noah looked up.

"You knew him that well?"

Miller nodded.

"He came to me once."

"When?"

"Years before you were born."

"What did he say?"

Miller smiled.

"He asked me to promise something."

"What?"

"That if you ever became too obsessed with winning, I'd remind you what mattered."

Noah became silent.

"You kept the promise."

"I tried."

Noah folded the letter.

"I'll accept."

Miller smiled.

"I knew you would."

Five years after the day Noah lost control, he stood in the same arena where Maya had defeated him.

This time, he wasn't competing.

He was coaching.

Maya stood across the mat.

Her opponent was younger.

Faster.

Confident.

The bell rang.

Maya fought intelligently.

She didn't rush.

She didn't chase.

She waited.

Noah smiled.

Miller stood beside him.

"She learned."
