But looking at Milo's bruises, Garrett realized a bitter truth: shielding a child from the world’s cruelty leaves them defenseless when that cruelty inevitably finds them. Milo didn't need to be a soldier, but he needed boundaries. He needed confidence. He needed to know he had a right to take up space.

The next morning, Garrett began researching martial arts schools in their city. He wasn't looking for a place to turn Milo into a fighter. He was looking for discipline, respect, and self-defense.

He skipped over the aggressive MMA gyms boasting about "cage warriors." He eventually found an advertisement for Keller Combat Academy. The website promised "Discipline, Confidence, and Anti-Bullying Tactics." It seemed perfect on paper. It was located just a few miles away, in a newly renovated commercial plaza.

Garrett showed the website to Milo. The boy was hesitant, terrified of getting hurt again. "I won't let anyone hurt you, Milo," Garrett said softly. "But you need to know how to protect yourself when I'm not there. Just try it. If you hate it, we walk away." Milo looked at the pictures of kids in crisp white uniforms smiling with trophies. He took a deep breath and nodded. "Okay, Dad."
