Travis looked her over.

“You can still change your mind.”

“I know.”

“You won't hurt my feelings.”

“I know.”

He smiled.

The timer started.

Travis moved immediately.

Fast.

He reached for Evelyn's wrist.

She moved half a step backward.

He grabbed again.

She turned.

His momentum carried him past her.

A few students laughed.

Travis spun around.

“Lucky.”

Evelyn said nothing.

He attacked again.

This time she didn't retreat.

She stepped inside his reach, caught his elbow, shifted her weight, and guided him toward the mat.

Travis landed on his back.

The room went silent.

He stared upward.

Evelyn stood beside him.

“Are you okay?”

Travis blinked.

“Yes.”

“Good.”

He got up.

His expression had changed.

The timer continued.

He rushed her again.

Evelyn slipped past his shoulder.

This time she used his balance against him.

Travis stumbled.

She didn't strike.

She simply touched the back of his shoulder.

“Your weight is too far forward.”

Travis stared at her.

“What?”

“You're committing before you know where I'm going.”

He attacked again.

She avoided him.

Again.

And again.

By the end of the round, Travis was breathing heavily.

Evelyn wasn't.

Grant watched carefully.

The students weren't laughing anymore.

Travis returned to the line.

Marcus stepped forward.

He looked at Evelyn differently.

“Okay.”

Evelyn nodded.

Marcus raised his hands.

The timer started.

He moved faster than Travis.

Much faster.

A jab.

A feint.

A step.

Evelyn blocked.

Marcus smiled.

“Not bad.”

He attacked again.

Evelyn ducked.

Marcus turned.

She was already behind him.

He stopped.

“How did you—”

Evelyn touched his shoulder.

“Your foot tells me what your hands are going to do.”

Marcus stared at her.

The room became completely silent.

Then Adrian stepped onto the mat.

He was the largest man in the academy.

Six feet four.

Nearly two hundred fifty pounds.

He looked at Evelyn.

“You won't move me.”

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“I don't need to.”

The timer started.

Adrian charged.

And for the first time that evening, Evelyn moved toward her opponent instead of away.

The two collided.

Adrian reached for her.

Evelyn pivoted.

His momentum carried him forward.

She shifted her hips.

The heavyweight stumbled.

He dropped to one knee.

The crowd gasped.

Adrian looked up.

Evelyn offered him her hand.

“Again?”

He grabbed it.

And this time, there was no laughter.

Only respect.

But none of them knew the truth.

Evelyn had not learned combat recently.

She had spent twenty years trying to forget it.

And the three men standing before her had just forced open a door she had kept locked since the night her husband died.

The next morning, a video of the sparring session appeared online.

It was only forty-seven seconds long.

But that was enough.

Someone had recorded Travis being thrown.

Then Marcus missing.

Then Adrian dropping to one knee.

The caption was simple:

“Mom walks into MMA gym and embarrasses three champions.”

By lunchtime, the video had been viewed thousands of times.

By evening, reporters were calling Iron Harbor.

Grant Miller hated every second of it.

He called Evelyn.

“You need to take the video down.”

“I didn't post it.”

“Your son did.”

“I'll talk to him.”

“This is bad for the academy.”

Evelyn paused.

“Why?”

“Because people are saying our fighters were beaten by a middle-aged woman.”

“They weren't beaten.”

Grant was silent.

“What?”

“We were sparring.”

“You know what people think.”

“I don't control what people think.”

Grant lowered his voice.

“Who are you?”

Evelyn looked out her kitchen window.

“I told you.”

“No.”

He paused.

“You told me your name.”

“I am a mother.”

“That's not what I mean.”

Evelyn didn't answer.

Grant continued.

“You knew exactly where to stand.”

“Yes.”

“You knew how to break balance.”

“Yes.”

“You knew how to counter three different styles.”

“Yes.”
