They Judged Him at the Restaurant—Then His Daughter Spoke Up
Chapter 5
Ryan's face tightened.
“Because I was scared.”
Daniel waited.
Ryan continued.
“Nicole wanted to report it. I told her we should wait.”
“Wait for what?”
“To find out who was responsible.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You're not investigators.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Ryan looked toward Nicole.
“Because she found something.”
Nicole closed her eyes.
Ryan continued.
“She found that the payments weren't random.”
Daniel's attention sharpened.
“What did she find?”
Ryan took out his phone.
He opened a photograph.
Then walked toward Daniel.
He handed it over.
Daniel looked at the screen.
It was a photograph of a handwritten note.
A list of dates.
Amounts.
And initials.
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“What is this?”
Nicole answered.
“It was inside Evelyn's desk.”
Marcus froze.
“Evelyn?”
Nicole nodded.
“I found it last week.”
Daniel stared at the note.
The initials appeared beside several large payments.
E.B.
His expression became unreadable.
Amelia stepped closer.
“Dad?”
Daniel handed her the phone.
She looked at the note.
Her eyes widened.
“E.B.”
“Yes,” Nicole said.
“You think Evelyn is stealing from us?”
“I don't know.”
“But the initials…”
“Could mean anything,” Nicole said.
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.”
He looked at everyone.
“We don't accuse anyone without proof.”
Ryan nodded.
“That was what I kept telling Nicole.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Then you did one thing right.”
Ryan looked surprised.
“Thank you.”
“But you did another thing very wrong.”
Ryan's expression fell.
“You allowed fear to control you.”
Ryan lowered his head.
Daniel continued.
“You knew something was happening. You had information. And instead of coming to me, you hid it.”
“I know.”
“You could have allowed the theft to continue.”
“I know.”
Daniel stared at him for a long moment.
Then he turned toward Marcus.
“Get Evelyn.”
Marcus nodded.
“Now?”
“Now.”
Marcus hurried away.
Nicole looked terrified.
“What are you going to do?”
Daniel answered,
“Find the truth.”
A few minutes later, Evelyn appeared at the end of the hallway.
She was in her early fifties, professionally dressed, carrying a tablet.
“What happened?”
Marcus said nothing.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Evelyn.”
She stopped.
“Mr. Carter.”
“Come with me.”
She looked around.
“Why?”
“I have some questions.”
Evelyn's eyes moved toward Nicole.
Then Ryan.
Then the folder in Daniel's hand.
Something changed in her expression.
Only for a second.
But Daniel saw it.
Fear.
He had spent too many years negotiating business deals not to recognize it.
They entered the private office.
Daniel closed the door.
Everyone sat down.
Evelyn remained standing.
Daniel placed the folder on the desk.
“Do you recognize Harbor Crest Provisions?”
Evelyn answered immediately.
“Yes.”
“Who are they?”
“One of our vendors.”
“No.”
Evelyn frowned.
“What?”
“They aren't.”
Daniel slid an invoice toward her.
“These invoices are fraudulent.”
Evelyn looked at the paper.
Her face became tense.
“I don't know anything about that.”
Daniel watched her carefully.
“Then perhaps you can explain why your initials appear beside several payments.”
Evelyn looked at the handwritten note.
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then she laughed nervously.
“That isn't my handwriting.”
Daniel nodded.
“I know.”
Evelyn looked relieved.
“But someone wants us to think it is.”
Her relief disappeared.
Daniel continued.
“That's why I haven't accused you.”
Evelyn slowly sat down.
“I swear I didn't steal anything.”
“I believe you.”
She looked surprised.
Daniel leaned forward.
“But I don't believe you're telling me everything.”
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“Mr. Carter…”
“Who pressured you?”
She looked at the door.
Then back at him.
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“They'll destroy me.”
Amelia's expression changed.
“Who?”
Evelyn remained silent.
Daniel waited.
Finally, she whispered,
“I never saw the person.”
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“What person?”
“The person who gave the instructions.”
“What instructions?”
“To approve the payments.”
Silence.
“Who contacted you?”
“Someone used an anonymous email.”
“Show me.”
Evelyn pulled out her phone.
She opened her email.
There were several messages.
Daniel read them.
The sender's address was meaningless.
But the instructions were clear.
Approve the payments.
Use the vendor account.
Do not ask questions.
Do not contact Daniel.
Daniel looked at Amelia.
“This is bigger than we thought.”
Then Evelyn said something that changed everything.
“There was one more thing.”
“What?”
“The person knew things about this restaurant that only senior management would know.”
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Marcus looked back at him.
Evelyn continued.
“They knew when you were traveling.”
“They knew when Amelia was coming.”
“They knew which accounts you personally checked.”
“They knew when the restaurant was busiest.”
Daniel slowly leaned back.
This wasn't a random theft.
Someone had been watching them.
Someone inside the organization had been feeding information to whoever was behind the scheme.
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
“Ryan.”
Ryan stepped inside.
“Yes?”
“Where were you last Tuesday at 10 p.m.?”
Ryan looked confused.
“At home.”
“Can anyone verify that?”
“My sister.”
Daniel nodded.
“Fine.”
Then he turned to Nicole.
“And you?”
“At home.”
Daniel nodded again.
He looked at Marcus.
“And you?”
“Here.”
Daniel studied him.
“Every night?”
Marcus hesitated.
“Most nights.”
Daniel nodded.
Nobody spoke.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
“Daniel Carter.”
A voice on the other end said something.
Daniel's expression changed.
“What?”
Everyone watched him.
He listened.
Then asked,
“Are you certain?”
Another pause.
“Send it to me.”
He ended the call.
Amelia immediately stood.
“What happened?”
Daniel looked at her.
“The bank found another account.”
“Whose?”
Daniel's face was grim.
“An account connected to Harbor Crest.”
“Who owns it?”
Daniel placed his phone on the desk.
The room became silent.
“The account belongs to a company registered six months ago.”
Amelia leaned forward.
“What company?”
Daniel looked at everyone.
Then he said,
“Carter Hospitality Consulting.”
Amelia froze.
“That sounds like one of our companies.”
“It isn't.”
“Then why does it have our name?”
Daniel shook his head.
“Because whoever is behind this wanted it to.”
Marcus stared at him.
“So someone created a fake company using your name?”
“Yes.”
“And they've been moving money through it?”
“Apparently.”
Daniel stood.
“We're going to the bank first thing tomorrow morning.”
Amelia nodded.
“And after that?”
Daniel looked around the office.
“At that point, we stop guessing.”
He picked up the folder.
“We find out who created the company.”
He looked toward the restaurant floor.
“And we find out who helped them.”
Everyone remained silent.
Then Daniel walked toward the door.
Before opening it, he stopped.
He looked back at Ryan.
“You asked earlier if you were fired.”
Ryan nodded nervously.
Daniel shook his head.
“Not tonight.”
Ryan looked surprised.
Daniel continued.
“Tonight, you stay.”
“Why?”
“Because you may know something you don't realize is important.”
Ryan nodded.
“Yes, sir.”
Daniel opened the door.
Then he turned to Amelia.
“Come on.”
As they walked toward the dining room, Amelia whispered,
“Dad.”
“Yes?”
“Do you think we know the person behind all this?”
Daniel looked ahead.
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Daniel's eyes moved toward the office where the accounting records were kept.
“I think they've been standing in front of us this entire time.”
He paused.
“And I think tonight, they realized we've started looking back.”
Outside, rain continued falling against the windows of The Sterling Room.
The restaurant remained open.
The customers continued eating.
The music continued playing.
But inside the quiet office upstairs, someone had just received a message.
THEY KNOW ABOUT THE ACCOUNT.
A reply appeared seconds later.
THEN WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THEY NEVER FIND THE REST.
And with those words, the mystery that began with one man's humiliation at a restaurant became something far more dangerous.
Daniel Carter had come to dinner expecting nothing more than a quiet meal.
Instead, he had uncovered a conspiracy inside his own business.
And the person responsible was still inside The Sterling Room.
The End.
