THEY MOCKED THE GIRL AT THE GALA
Chapter 7
The gala had been one night.
One moment.
One confrontation.
This was different.
This was the beginning of a much longer fight.
And somewhere in the city, a young woman named Lena Brooks was about to walk into Maya's office carrying a folder that would test everything Maya believed she could accomplish.
Lena Brooks arrived twenty minutes late.
Maya noticed immediately that she had not slept.
Her eyes were red, her hair was pulled back carelessly, and she clutched a worn manila folder against her chest as though someone might try to take it from her.
“I'm sorry,” Lena said. “The bus—”
“You don't have to apologize.”
Lena stopped.
For a moment, she looked confused.
Then she slowly sat down.
Maya poured her a glass of water.
“Tell me what's happening.”
Lena looked at the folder.
“I got fired.”
Maya waited.
“They said I violated company policy.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
Lena swallowed.
“I reported my manager.”
The story came out slowly.
Lena worked for a luxury real estate company that managed apartment buildings throughout the city. Two months earlier, she had discovered emails suggesting that potential tenants from certain neighborhoods were being quietly rejected.
The language was carefully written.
Nothing openly illegal.
But the pattern was obvious.
Applicants with certain names received fewer responses.
Families using housing vouchers were repeatedly told that apartments were suddenly unavailable.
Meanwhile, other applicants were offered viewings for the same units.
Lena had reported what she found.
A week later, her responsibilities were reduced.
Two weeks later, she was accused of accessing confidential files without permission.
Then she was fired.
“I thought someone would help me,” Lena said.
Maya leaned forward.
“Someone will.”
Lena looked at her skeptically.
“Everyone says that.”
Maya understood.
Promises were easy.
Evidence was harder.
She opened the folder.
Inside were printed emails, screenshots, employee schedules, and notes Lena had carefully organized.
Maya's pulse quickened.
“This is important.”
“You think I have a case?”
“I think we need to investigate.”
Lena looked down.
“There are other people.”
“What do you mean?”
“Employees who saw things.”
“Will they talk?”
Lena gave a bitter laugh.
“Not if they want to keep their jobs.”
Maya spent the next several days reviewing the evidence.
The company was called Sterling Residential Group.
Its founder was one of the city's most influential developers.
Its executives attended charity events.
Its advertisements appeared on buses, billboards, and television.
And one name appeared repeatedly in the documents.
A board member.
An investor.
A man who also happened to serve on the Harrington Foundation's advisory council.
Maya stared at the screen.
Then she walked directly into Daniel's office.
“We have a problem.”
Daniel looked up.
“I've noticed that sentence usually means I should sit down.”
Maya placed the file on his desk.
He read the name.
His expression changed.
“Sterling Residential?”
“Yes.”
Daniel continued reading.
When he reached the advisory council member's name, he leaned back.
“Are you certain?”
“Not yet.”
“But?”
“But I think we're going to find out.”
Daniel folded his hands.
“Maya, if this investigation leads where I think it might lead, there will be pressure.”
“From whom?”
“Everyone.”
She nodded.
“Good.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Good?”
“If no one is uncomfortable, we're probably not doing anything important.”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“You sound like your mother.”
“I'll take that as a compliment.”
“You should.”
The investigation began.
Within two weeks, the Carter Community Justice Initiative had received calls from six former employees of Sterling Residential.
Then nine.
Then fourteen.
Some were willing to speak.
Others were terrified.
One woman hung up three times before finally agreeing to meet Maya.
A former leasing agent provided internal training documents.
Another employee gave them access to archived schedules.
The pattern became impossible to ignore.
Sterling Residential was not simply mistreating one employee.
It appeared to be part of a larger system.
And when the first legal notice was delivered to the company's headquarters, the reaction was immediate.
A reporter appeared outside Maya's office.
Two donors called the foundation.
One board member demanded that the initiative “reconsider its priorities.”
Then, late one Friday evening, Maya received an email.
There was no signature.
No name.
Only one sentence.
You have no idea who you're fighting.
Maya stared at the screen.
For a moment, fear moved through her.
Then she printed the message.
She placed it inside the evidence folder.
And she continued working.
Because whoever had sent it was right about one thing.
Maya did not yet know exactly who she was fighting.
But she was about to find out.
The first attack came disguised as an article.
A local news website published a story questioning whether Maya had been given her position because of her qualifications or because she was Daniel Carter's daughter.
The headline was carefully written.
It asked questions rather than making accusations.
But Maya understood its purpose.
