The morning started with coffee, bare feet, and the kind of silence Evelyn Carter had not

heard in months. There were no phones ringing. No lawyers arguing. No clerk knocking

with another emergency motion. Just birds moving through the maple trees, a soft

October breeze, and a mug of black coffee warming both of her hands while she stood on

the front porch of the house she had bought only twelve days earlier.

She wore a faded Howard University sweatshirt, black joggers, and old house slippers

with one flattened heel. Her hair was wrapped in a silk scarf. Her face had no makeup.

She looked, by every fair human standard, like a woman enjoying a Saturday morning at

home. But Fairview Oaks was not always a fair place.
