“Tell me everything.”

Samuel did.

He had founded the original Circle with seven ranchers.

It had begun as protection.

Then Nathaniel Langley joined.

Money corrupted the group.

Some men wanted control.

Samuel wanted out.

Elizabeth discovered the truth.

She threatened to expose them.

The Circle hunted her.

Samuel helped her escape.

But someone betrayed them.

Samuel was captured.

Elizabeth disappeared.

Samuel escaped years later.

He had been trying to dismantle the organization ever since.

Hannah listened.

“What happened to my mother?”

Samuel looked down.

“She survived the first attack.”

Hannah's heart stopped.

“What?”

“She escaped.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“You never found her?”

“No.”

“Then she may be alive.”

Samuel looked at her.

“I spent twenty years hoping.”

Hannah closed her eyes.

For the first time, the possibility existed.

Her mother might not have died.

Maybe she had disappeared.

Maybe she had survived.

Maybe the story was not finished.

Samuel touched her shoulder.

“There is one more thing.”

“What?”

“The man who betrayed us.”

Hannah looked at him.

“Who?”

Samuel's face became grave.

“Someone you already know.”

Before he could say the name, gunfire erupted outside.

The Truth Beneath the Sack

Men stormed the house.

Cole fired from the hallway.

Eli guarded the stairs.

Samuel grabbed Hannah.

“Take the registry.”

She did.

“Where?”

“Outside.”

They ran through a hidden passage.

Snow hit Hannah's face.

She looked back.

The house burned.

The true Circle had found them.

But the registry was safe.

Cole emerged.

Eli followed.

Samuel was behind them.

For a moment, the five stood beneath the falling snow.

Hannah looked at her father.

“You said someone betrayed you.”

Samuel nodded.

“Who?”

He hesitated.

Then:

“Victor.”

Hannah froze.

“Victor?”

“He was working for the Circle before you ever met him.”

Cole stared.

“That means the auction…”

Samuel nodded.

“Was planned.”

“To make me disappear.”

“Yes.”

“To make me look worthless.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“So nobody would search for you.”

Hannah touched the scar on her neck.

“And this?”

Samuel looked at it.

“They branded you because the true Circle believed you carried the bloodline of the original founders.”

Hannah shook her head.

“Blood again.”

Samuel nodded.

“They wanted to control what you represented.”

Hannah looked at the registry.

“What happens now?”

Samuel answered:

“Now you decide.”

She stared at him.

“What do you mean?”

“You can take the registry to the authorities.”

“And?”

“The Circle will collapse.”

“Or?”

“You can destroy it.”

Hannah looked at the burning house.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she remembered Bitter Creek.

The laughter.

The sack.

The rope.

The cold.

The moment Cole had cut her wrists free.

She understood.

The people who had hurt her had always believed they could decide her value.

Victor.

Nathaniel.

Circle Bar.

Even the men who laughed.

They had all made the same mistake.
