"I'll compete if the format is fair and both sides agree to the rules," Ronan continued. "But I'm not here to prove that Mara is dangerous, unstable, or anything else you've written about her."

Vale studied him with open irritation.

"You seem to have forgotten who helped build your career."

"No," Ronan said. "I remember. That's why it took me so long to understand what you were asking me to become."

Felix lowered his gaze to hide a brief smile.

Vale turned back to Mara.

"You've changed the atmosphere in that academy remarkably quickly."

"I didn't change it. I stopped pretending it was healthy."

Elaine Porter raised a hand.

"We will proceed according to the agreement. The exhibition will be a controlled grappling match between Mara Ellison and Ronan Pike, with no striking, no uncontrolled takedowns, and immediate stoppage upon any safety signal. Both participants will have equal warm-up time. Neither may be asked to perform an unscheduled demonstration."

She looked at both athletes.

"Do you agree?"

Mara answered first.

"Yes."

Ronan followed.

"Yes."

"Then the format is approved."

Vale sat back.

"Very well."

"I want the event's recorded media to be preserved in full. All camera angles, all audio, and the complete match footage. No edited segment may be represented as the full recording."

Steven looked uncertain.

Vale answered before he could.

"That is a production matter."

"It's a condition of my participation."

Elaine Porter consulted the agreement.

"Given the circumstances, I recommend adding it as a preservation requirement. The event's official recording will be retained in full, and any promotional edit must be labeled as an excerpt."

Vale's jaw tightened.

"Approved."

The meeting ended with signatures.

As Mara collected her papers, Vale remained seated.

"Walk with me," he said.

"No private conversations."

"Your brother can come."

Daniel stepped forward.

"I'll be there."

Vale glanced at Adrian.

"And him?"

"He's documenting the meeting," Mara replied.

For a moment, Vale seemed to consider objecting. Then he stood.

The sound of technicians testing the arena's audio system echoed through the walls.

Vale stopped near a closed production office.

"You think you've uncovered a conspiracy," he said.

"I think I've uncovered evidence that contradicts the story you promoted."

"Peter Shaw is a disgruntled former contractor. The documents you possess are incomplete. The recording has not been authenticated."

"An independent analyst is examining it."

"An analyst you selected."

"An analyst with no financial connection to you."

Vale's expression hardened.

"Do you understand what happens when you publicly accuse a person of wrongdoing? You can damage reputations, destroy businesses, and expose yourself to legal action."

"I'm not making a public accusation. I'm asking for the original record to be examined."

"You always did confuse stubbornness with integrity."

"And you always confused control with authority."

Vale noticed.

"Still protecting everyone around you," he said. "That was your weakness."

"No," Mara replied. "It was the part of me you couldn't buy."

For the first time, his composure cracked.

"You have no idea what I sacrificed to keep that organization alive. Athletes, sponsors, venues, investors—everyone wanted certainty. They wanted a clean story. A complicated incident involving a young competitor and a training center under investigation would have destroyed years of work."

"Then you should have told the truth."

"The truth is rarely as simple as you believe."

"Maybe. But an edited recording isn't the truth just because it makes your life easier."

Vale leaned closer.

"You should consider what Daniel stands to lose if you continue."

Mara's face went still.

"Are you threatening him?"

"I'm reminding you that your actions have consequences."

Adrian raised his phone.

"That statement is being recorded."

Vale looked at him sharply.

"Turn it off."

"No," Adrian said. "You agreed to documented discussions."

For several seconds, Vale said nothing.

Then he stepped away.

"Enjoy your match, Mara."

He walked toward the production office and disappeared inside.

Daniel waited until the door closed.

"He hasn't changed," he said.

Mara looked down at the signed agreement in her hand.

"Maybe not."

"Are you all right?"

She considered the question.

"I don't know."

It was the first honest answer she had given him all morning.

On the other side of the corridor, Ronan was speaking to Coach Bennett, asking for a final review of the safety procedures. Felix had volunteered to help the event staff check the mat boundaries. Victor was reviewing the preservation agreement with Elaine Porter.

Northbridge was no longer behaving like a group of individuals waiting to see who would win.

They were acting like a team.

Mara turned toward the arena doors.

She had once believed that returning to competition meant proving she had never been broken.

Now she understood that she had been trying to prove something impossible.

People broke. Trust broke. Careers ended. The past could not be rewritten into something painless.

But a person could still choose what happened next.

She walked toward the mat.

The showcase would begin in three hours.
