"End of the line, Cole!"Ethan looked up. Standing on a high granite shelf seventy feet above the canyon floor was Cal Rourke, flanked by four Copper Ridge gunmen with rifles leveled straight down at the trail. And behind them, riding slowly out from the shadow of the bottleneck on a magnificent gray stallion, was Silas Harrow himself.

Silas Harrow was a man built like a fortress. He was in his late fifties, with thick, steel-gray hair cut square around a heavy, granite-like jaw. He wore a dark wool suit tailored in San Francisco, an embroidered silk vest held together with gold chain links, and a wide-brimmed white Stetson that bore not a single stain. His dark eyes were cold, calculating, and entirely lacking in human warmth—the eyes of a man who viewed people as simple figures on a balance sheet.Harrow pulled his gray stallion to a halt fifty yards in front of Ethan’s party, resting both hands casually on the silver-plated pommel of his saddle. Two armed men stood on either side of him, their carbines resting across their laps."Ethan Cole," Harrow said, his deep, resonant voice filling the sandstone canyon like thunder. "You’ve caused me a great deal of inconvenience today."Ethan kept his bay horse steady, his body positioned carefully between Harrow’s men and the three sisters behind him. He did not draw his rifle yet—doing so with four snipers on the ridge above would mean instant death."You're far from home, Harrow," Ethan called out, his tone crisp and even. "Copper Ridge is fifteen miles north."Harrow smiled—a terrifying, bloodless movement of his thin lips. "Every acre of stone you're looking at belongs to me, Cole. Or it will by the end of the month."Harrow turned his cold gaze past Ethan, fixing his attention on Clara, Ruth, and Mae. His eyes lingered on the black leather satchel strapped to Mae’s chest."Girls," Harrow said, his tone turning dismissive, like a father scolding disobedient children. "You’ve had your little adventure. You’ve dragged this poor rancher into your family’s ruin, and for what? A few papers you don't even know how to read?"Ruth urged her mule forward half a step, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated hatred. "We know how to read them, Harrow! We know about the forged deeds! We know about the bribes paid to Judge Miller’s predecessor! And we know you murdered our father!"Harrow didn't even flinch. He slowly pulled a leather cigar case from his vest pocket, selected a long black cigar, and struck a match against his saddle horn. He lit the cigar, blowing a plume of gray smoke into the clear canyon air."Your father was an obstinate, foolish man who refused a generous cash offer for a piece of useless dirt," Harrow said coldly. "He chose to fight progress. And progress crushed him. Just as it crushes anyone who stands in the way of Copper Ridge."Harrow looked back at Ethan, his expression hardening."Here is my offer, Cole," Harrow said flatly. "You walk away right now. Leave the horses, leave the women, and leave the satchel. Ride back to your eighty acres, and I will forget you ever pointed a weapon at my men. You will be allowed to live out your quiet life on your little ranch."Ethan looked up at the four snipers lining the red rock ledge above. Then he looked back at Harrow."And if I refuse?" Ethan asked.Harrow took a slow puff from his cigar. "Then Rourke’s men will paint these rocks with your blood. My men will take the satchel from the girl's dead hands. And by sunset, my crew will ride out to your ranch and burn every timber, every fence, and every blade of grass until there isn't a trace of the Cole family left on this earth."
