Three Champions Told the New Woman She Didn’t Belong — Less Than a Minute Later, They Were All on the Mat
Chapter 2
The receptionist checked the ledger, frowned, and nodded. "Okay, Elena. You're on the list. Locker rooms are down the hall to the left. The Pro Class is on the center mat."
"Thank you."
Ten minutes later, Elena stepped out of the locker room. She was dressed in a plain, unpatched white gi. The cotton was worn, softened by years of friction, but impeccably clean. Around her waist, she tied a simple, frayed white belt.
In the martial arts world, a white belt signifies a beginner, a novice, someone who knows absolutely nothing. But to a truly trained eye, there were clues that contradicted the belt. There was the way she walked—perfectly balanced, rolling softly from heel to toe, her center of gravity low. There was the cauliflower ear on her left side, a subtle thickening of the cartilage that only comes from years of brutal, grinding headlocks and mat burns. And there was her grip on the lapels of her gi, her knuckles scarred and calloused.
But the Triumvirate didn't have trained eyes. They only had their egos.
The center mat was buzzing with energy as twenty elite grapplers warmed up. Marcus was doing heavy sprawls, shaking the floorboards. Julian was stretching his legs into a split, looking utterly bored. Jaxson was shadow-wrestling, his movements explosive and aggressive.
When Elena stepped onto the edge of the mat and bowed—a traditional sign of respect—the gym went quiet. The rhythmic thud of bodies hitting the canvas ceased.
Marcus stopped his sprawls and stood up, wiping sweat from his forehead. He looked at the frail-looking woman in the white belt and let out a sharp, incredulous laugh.
"Hey, lost and found," Marcus called out, his voice booming across the gym. "The cardio kickboxing class is over there. You took a wrong turn."
A few of the gym members chuckled nervously.
Elena didn't blink. She stepped fully onto the mat. "I'm here for the advanced grappling session. Coach Henderson approved it."
Julian stood up, adjusting his heavily patched black gi. He sauntered over to her, looking down his nose. "Look, sweetheart. I don't know what Henderson told you, but this isn't a hobby mat. We don't play touch-butt in the park here. People get hurt on this mat. Badly."
"I understand the risks," Elena said quietly.
Jaxson strutted over, flanked by Marcus and Julian. The three champions formed an imposing wall of muscle and menace. "You don't get it," Jaxson sneered, stepping aggressively close into her personal space. "This is a shark tank. You’re a minnow. We don't have time to baby a white belt. You don’t belong here. Pack your bag and go home before you get your neck snapped."
Elena looked at Jaxson, then at Julian, and finally at Marcus. Her heart rate didn't spike. Her breathing remained deep and even. She had fought in arenas in Tokyo, Moscow, and Rio de Janeiro in front of screaming crowds of thousands. The posturing of three gym bullies felt like a gentle breeze.
"I’m not asking you to baby me," Elena said, her voice dropping an octave, carrying a chilling absolute certainty. "I’m asking you to roll."
