"My sister."
Adrian looked closer.
"Your sister?"
"Older sister."
"What happened to her?"
Maya didn't answer immediately.
"She was good."
"How good?"
"Better than me."
Adrian smiled.
"That's not an answer."
Maya smiled faintly.
"She won three regional tournaments."
"What was her name?"
"Elena."
Adrian's expression changed.
He remembered Elena.
Every coach did.
She had been one of the most technically gifted young fighters he had ever seen.
But she disappeared from competition suddenly.
"You're Elena's sister?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I didn't want special treatment."
Adrian nodded.
That made sense.
"What happened to her?"
Maya looked at the photograph.
"She stopped fighting."
"Why?"
"She injured her knee."
"Career ending?"
"No."
Adrian waited.
Maya continued.
"She said she stopped because she realized she was fighting for the wrong reason."
"What reason?"
"To prove she couldn't be hurt."
Adrian looked at Maya.
"And you?"
Maya smiled.
"I'm trying to learn the opposite."
"What?"
"That being strong doesn't mean pretending you aren't hurt."
Adrian was silent.
Then he said:
"Your sister was right."
Maya looked at him.
"About what?"
"Jiu-jitsu isn't supposed to teach you how to hurt people."
He tapped the photograph.
"It teaches you how to remain calm when someone else wants you to panic."
Maya nodded.
Across the room, Marcus was watching them.
He had heard enough to become curious.
For the first time, he wondered whether he had made a mistake.
Because the quiet girl they had mocked wasn't trying to prove she belonged.
She was trying to rebuild something.
And that was much harder.
The challenge came on Friday.
The academy was crowded.
Students were preparing for an upcoming regional tournament.
Marcus was drilling takedowns.
Leo was working submissions.
Jake was sparring with another beginner.
Then Marcus walked toward Maya.
"One match."
Maya looked at him.
"No."
"Scared?"
"No."
"Then why not?"
"Because you don't want to train."
Marcus smiled.
"What do I want?"
"To win."
The room became quiet.
Marcus laughed.
"You think you're special?"
"No."
"Then prove it."
Maya shook her head.
