Finally, Marcus said:
"Your old brothers still remember you."
Elias shook his head.
"I don't want them involved."
Marcus stood.
"You don't get to decide that anymore."
Then he walked outside.
Elias watched the motorcycle disappear down the highway.
He knew exactly what was coming.
The past was returning.
And this time, it was bringing everyone with it.
For the next three days, nothing happened.
That was worse.
Elias understood silence.
Silence meant preparation.
Cole disappeared from town.
Two of his friends did too.
Then, on Saturday morning, a stranger entered the diner.
He was tall.
Broad.
Wearing a black leather vest.
Elias recognized the patch immediately.
The man removed his helmet.
"Mr. Mercer."
Elias nodded.
"Morning."
"My name is Daniel Cross."
"I know."
Daniel smiled.
"Then you know why I'm here."
"I do."
Daniel looked around.
"Your place hasn't changed."
"Neither have you."
"I wish that were true."
Daniel sat at the counter.
"Marcus called."
Elias poured coffee.
"He shouldn't have."
"Probably not."
Daniel took a sip.
"He's worried."
"I'm not."
Daniel laughed.
"You were always terrible at lying."
Elias looked at him.
