The Roadblock

The checkpoint appeared without warning.

One minute, the highway outside Sacramento was moving normally beneath the bright California sun.

The next, three lanes narrowed into one.

Orange cones stretched across the asphalt, forcing every vehicle toward a temporary inspection point where two sheriff's cruisers sat at an angle beneath the heat.

A white sign stood beside the road.

COUNTY CHECKPOINT
VEHICLES STOP

Traffic moved slowly.

Pickup trucks.

Sedans.

Delivery vans.

Motorcycles.

Most drivers stopped for less than a minute. They showed identification, answered a few questions, and were waved onward.

Then the red Ducati appeared.

It was a Panigale V4, bright red and immaculate, its engine growling softly as it approached the checkpoint.

The rider was a Black woman in her mid-thirties.

She wore fitted black motorcycle leathers, protective boots, gloves, and a glossy full-face helmet. Long black hair escaped beneath it and moved gently in the wind.

She looked completely comfortable on the motorcycle.

But something immediately caught her attention.

The deputies weren't stopping everyone.

A white sedan barely slowed before being waved through.

A pickup truck received a casual gesture from one deputy.

A delivery van was directed around the cones without inspection.

Then the Ducati reached the front.

A deputy stepped directly into her lane.

His palm went up.

"Engine off."

The woman squeezed the brake.

The Ducati came to a smooth stop.

She planted one boot on the pavement.

Then she shut off the engine.

The sudden silence seemed to make everyone nearby more aware of her presence.

The deputy stared at the motorcycle.

Then at her.

Then back at the motorcycle.

"License and registration."

The woman lifted her visor.

"Certainly."

Her voice was calm.

Professional.

The deputy seemed almost irritated by how composed she sounded.

She reached toward the inside pocket of her riding jacket.

His hand immediately moved toward his belt.

"Slow."

She stopped.

"I'm retrieving my wallet."

"I said slow."

She carefully pulled out her wallet and handed him her driver's license.

The deputy examined it.

Then looked at her.

Then at the Ducati.

"This your motorcycle?"

"Yes."

"You sure about that?"

Her eyebrows rose slightly.

"That's an unusual question."

Another deputy approached.

Both men looked over the motorcycle as if it were a suspicious package.

The senior deputy pointed toward the Ducati.

"How much does something like this cost?"

The woman stared at him.

"Why?"

"Just asking."

"My registration should tell you whether I own it."

He ignored the answer.

"Step off."

She remained seated.
