Pulled her suitcase behind her.

And walked toward the gate.

She did not know that by the time Flight AS 1765 landed in New York, the world around her would be very different.

She did not know that millions of people would eventually see her face.

She did not know that the seat printed on her boarding pass would become a symbol.

She only knew one thing.

This time, if someone told her to move simply because they believed they deserved her place more than she did, she wasn't sure she would listen.

 Seat 2C

Flight AS 1765 was nearly full.

Selena entered the first-class cabin with her gray suitcase and checked her boarding pass.

2C.

She smiled.

Window seat.

Exactly what she wanted.

She walked down the aisle.

Then stopped.

Someone was already sitting in 2C.

A man in his late forties occupied the seat.

He wore an expensive navy suit.

His silver watch caught the cabin light.

His shoes were polished.

A leather briefcase rested beneath the seat.

He looked comfortable.

Very comfortable.

Selena checked her boarding pass again.

Then looked at the seat number.

2C.

There was no mistake.

She glanced at the man.

“Excuse me.”

He looked up.

“Yes?”

“I believe you're sitting in my seat.”

The man's expression barely changed.

“Your seat?”

Selena showed him the boarding pass.

“2C.”

He glanced at it for less than a second.

Then shrugged.

“I don't think that's right.”

Selena remained calm.

“You're in 2C.”

“Yes.”

“My boarding pass says 2C.”

He smiled.

“I'm sure we can figure this out.”

Selena looked at him.

“What exactly is there to figure out?”

The man's smile disappeared.

“I've already settled in.”

She almost laughed.

“That doesn't change the assignment.”

He looked down the aisle.

Then back at her.

“You could take another seat.”

Selena felt something familiar.

The old instinct.

The instinct to calculate.

To avoid confrontation.

To make the problem disappear.

It's just a seat.

For a fraction of a second, she almost stepped aside.

Then she remembered the train.

The conductor.

The businessman.

The feeling she had afterward.

The regret.

She looked at the man again.

“No.”

He blinked.

“Excuse me?”

“I paid for 2C.”

He leaned back.

“It's only a seat.”

Selena smiled.

“Yes.”

She paused.

“Which is why moving should be easy for you.”

A woman across the aisle looked up from her book.

Someone behind Selena stopped arranging a bag overhead.

The man stared at Selena.

“You're making this unnecessarily difficult.”

“No.”

Her voice remained gentle.

“I am asking you to sit in the seat assigned to you.”

He laughed.

“You know what? This is ridiculous.”

A flight attendant approached.

Her name tag read:

LAURA CRUZ.

“Is there a problem?”

Selena handed her boarding pass to Laura.

“This gentleman is sitting in my assigned seat.”

Laura looked at Selena's pass.

Then checked the man's.

“Mr. Whitman?”

The man nodded.

“Derek Whitman.”

Laura looked at the seat assignment.

“Sir, you're assigned to 4D.”

“I know.”

“Then…”

Derek interrupted.

“I have a back problem.”

Laura hesitated.

Selena noticed.

Derek continued.

“I need a window.”

Laura looked toward Selena.

“Ms. Vaughn, would you mind taking 4D?”

Selena stared at her.

“No.”

Laura looked surprised.

“I understand you're trying to help—”

“I am trying to help.”

Selena's voice was still calm.

“That's why I'm asking you to ask him to move.”

Derek suddenly laughed.

“This is unbelievable.”

Selena looked at him.

“What's unbelievable?”

“You're making a scene.”

Selena glanced around the quiet cabin.

“I haven't raised my voice.”

“You're embarrassing me.”

“I didn't tell anyone your name.”

“You know exactly what you're doing.”

“No.”

She paused.

“I'm sitting beside my assigned seat.”

Derek's face darkened.

“You people always make everything about discrimination.”

Selena's expression changed slightly.

Not anger.

Something closer to disappointment.

“I haven't mentioned discrimination.”

“You're implying it.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“You're sitting in my seat.”

Derek shook his head.

“This is exactly what I'm talking about.”

Laura stepped between them.

“Mr. Whitman, please return to your assigned seat.”

Derek didn't move.

Then he leaned closer to Selena.

“You're going to regret this.”

Selena held his gaze.

“I haven't done anything to you.”

“You've humiliated me.”

“No.”

Her voice dropped.

“You did that yourself.”

The cabin became completely silent.

Derek stared at her for several seconds.

Then finally stood.

He grabbed his briefcase.

He walked toward 4D.

But he didn't look defeated.
