"No," Marcus corrected gently. "Stay right here. We haven't done anything wrong. We are going to sit down, and we are going to eat."

He pulled out his phone, set it on the patio table, and hit record. In today’s world, Marcus knew that a Black man facing a police call from a frantic white neighbor was a dangerous, volatile situation. He needed to protect his family.

Ten agonizing minutes passed. The smell of the BBQ was now mixed with a heavy, suffocating tension. Barbara remained on the sidewalk, standing like a sentry, waiting for the flashing red and blue lights to arrive and validate her prejudice.

Chapter 5: The Black SUV

But the flashing lights didn't come.

Instead, a massive, gleaming black SUV with darkly tinted windows turned onto Maple Drive. It moved slowly, smoothly, exuding an aura of quiet power and authority. It lacked police decals, but it had a heavy, reinforced frame and government license plates.

Barbara's eyes widened. She assumed her call had been escalated. Perhaps they sent the detectives, she thought gleefully. Or maybe a federal task force. She stood taller, preparing to give her dramatic witness statement.

The SUV glided past Barbara entirely, completely ignoring her frantic waving, and pulled smoothly into the Hayes' driveway.

The heavy engine purred to a stop. The neighborhood seemed to hold its breath.

The front doors of the SUV opened simultaneously. Out of the driver’s side stepped a towering man in a sharply tailored dark suit, an earpiece curling behind his ear. But it was the passenger side that drew all the attention.

The door swung open, and out stepped a tall, distinguished older white man with a thick mane of silver hair. He was wearing casual slacks and a polo shirt, but his presence was unmistakable.
