with. I don't recognize you."

"I go to school with Leo. We're friends," Marcus explained, feeling the heavy weight of

an unearned interrogation. He stood up, towering over her slightly, though his posture

remained non-threatening. "My name is Marcus."

"I don't care what your name is," Eleanor snapped, stepping closer, her voice rising in

volume. Several nearby teenagers stopped talking and turned to look. "You don't belong

here. This is a private party in a private neighborhood. You need to leave before I call the

authorities."

Eleanor Rigby, however, was blissfully unaware of the political hierarchy standing in

front of her. To her, this was just another angry Black woman trying to defend a delinquent.

"Excuse me," Eleanor said, marching forward, desperate to maintain her position as the

victim and the hero. "I don't know who you think you are, but you cannot interfere with a

police investigation. This boy threatened me. He is a trespasser, and these officers are doing

their duty by removing him from our neighborhood!"

Mayor Vance slowly turned her head to look at Eleanor. The look she gave the woman

could have flash-frozen boiling water.

"I know exactly who I am," Mayor Vance said, her voice dripping with lethal politeness.

"I am Claire Vance, the Mayor of this city. And this 'boy' you are falsely accusing, and whom

these officers have unlawfully detained, is my son, Marcus."

The silence that followed was absolute. It was so profound that one could hear the

gentle hum of the pool pump from the backyard.

Eleanor Rigby’s mouth fell open, forming a perfect, silent 'O'. Her eyes darted wildly

from the polished, powerful Mayor, to the handsome, handcuffed teenager, and back again.

The reality of the monumental, catastrophic mistake she had just made crashed down upon

her with the force of an avalanche. Her knees literally buckled, and she had to grab onto

the side of the police cruiser to keep from collapsing onto the pavement.

"Your... your son?" Eleanor whispered, her voice completely devoid of its previous

venom, replaced now by hollow terror.

Mayor Vance ignored her, turning her attention back to the two officers, who were now

sweating profusely despite the comfortable evening temperature.

"Take those handcuffs off my son. Now," the Mayor commanded.

It wasn't a request. It was an executive order.

The older officer scrambled forward, fumbling with his keys in his haste. His hands

were shaking so badly it took him three tries to get the key into the lock. With a sharp click,

the cuffs fell away.

Marcus brought his arms forward, rubbing his raw wrists. He looked at his mother, his

stoic facade finally cracking just a fraction. "Mom," he said quietly.

Claire Vance stepped forward and wrapped her arms around her son, pulling him into a

fierce, protective embrace. She kissed the side of his head, murmuring, "I've got you, baby.

I'm right here. You're safe."

She held him for a long moment, anchoring him, before pulling back. When she turned

to face the police officers again, the brief moment of maternal vulnerability had vanished,

replaced entirely by the wrath of a mother scorned and a public official outraged by the

conduct of her own department.

"Now," Mayor Vance said, her voice ringing out clearly across the driveway, ensuring

every teenager with a recording phone captured every word. "I want a full, detailed

explanation as to why my son was placed in handcuffs at a party he was explicitly invited
