I stood up. I didn't shout. I used my command voice—the one that carried over rotor wash and artillery fire.

"According to Section 12 of the HOA charter," I stated, holding up my heavily highlighted copy of the bylaws, "any addendum restricting personal property requires a two-thirds majority vote from the homeowners, not just the board. Furthermore, the county noise ordinance permits up to 90 decibels during daylight hours. My vehicle operates at 85."

Karen’s face flushed. "This is about community harmony! That machine is a disruption!"

"No," Bob Carter interrupted, leaning into his microphone. "It's a damn nice car. The only disruption around here lately is you, Karen."

A murmur of agreement rippled through the crowd. Tom Harris cleared his throat, sitting up straighter. "Bob is right. The board has received thirty-two complaints this month. Thirty of them were written by you, Karen. The other two were complaints about you."

Karen sputtered, looking at Sarah for support, but Sarah suddenly found her meeting notes very interesting.

"I make a motion," I said to the room, "to review the necessity of the Secretary's role as Chief Covenants Enforcer, given the clear overreach of authority."

"Seconded," Bob said instantly.

The vote wasn't even close. Stripped of her unilateral power to issue fines and write citations, Karen’s empire crumbled. She resigned from the board three days later, citing a "lack of appreciation for order and discipline."

Maple Ridge Estates returned to what it was supposed to be: a quiet, predictable place where people actually talked to their neighbors instead of reporting them.

Now, on Saturday mornings, I roll the Lamborghini out onto the driveway. The V10 purrs as I wash it, the midnight-blue paint reflecting the clear sky. Kids still ride by on their scooters to look at it. Sometimes, Tom and Bob come over to talk cars and drink coffee.

As for Karen, she still lives down the street. We don't speak, but occasionally I see her peering through her blinds when I drive past. I always make sure to keep the RPMs low, give a polite wave, and enjoy the absolute peace.
